Hook: Should Universities shoulder the burden of paying college athletes for their hard work and profits that they bring to them? b. Context: Universities make billions of dollars from their sports programs while the athletes take on all the burden of these heavily physical activities. Before this was an easy answer. Today, with much more than the games bringing in this money, we look at the question of whether or not the universities should share more of the profits they reap from their sports programs. c. Thesis: While this is a tough question to answer with many negatives and positives, I believe Universities should provide monetary benefits to its student athletes that can be fair and consistent across all their major sports. This could come in many shapes and forms but throughout this paper we will explore the why and why nots some of these monetary benefits make sense. 2. Body Paragraph One
a. Key Point: Universities make over a billion dollars per year through ticket sales, endorsements, TV contracts, and licensing and merchandise. Football is the biggest money maker, while also being number one for sports injuries in college football. One way to help monetarily cover college athletes is to provide them with a medical insurance, one that can help provide for the health and safety of athletes, especially the ones who do not come from prominent families that can provide that assistance. b. Counterargument and Rebuttal: Detractors may say that this would be too heavy of a financial burden on the NCAA and universities, but it is a step towards ensuring the athletes that put their bodies on the line to win a game can remain happy and healthy by not worrying about a medical visit and the cost of such. c. Illustration/Example:
d. Explanation/Analysis/Tie-Back: If we wish to see college athletes get the benefits to succeed in life, getting them monetary compensation will go a long way to assisting them get that benefit that the university shares in with the NCAA.
