The U.S. Healthcare System: Analysis of a Healthcare Sector Interview and Presentation Colorado State University Global HCM320: US Healthcare System
I ntroduction of Interviewee and Topics Covered I conducted my interview for this semester's portfolio project with Ashley LeBlanc, Healthcare Administrator for Evolution Endodontics and Periodontics, located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Ashley has been in the dental field front office/management affiliation since 2011. The topics covered during this interview that influence the healthcare field are; political influences, quality, safety, competition, and future challenges. The following two slides analyze LeBlanc’s expertise and opinions on Healthcare and the prominent issues within the United States Healthcare system. Ashley LeBlanc, Bachelor’s of Health Admin at Ashford University.
Current Role in Healthcare Delivery The role in this specific sector focuses on the business side of healthcare, working with insurance companies to help minimize out-of-pocket expenses for patients and ensure the quality of care. Ashley believes healthcare administrators have more responsibilities, they are leaders and provide efficiency and quality business by managing finances, proper law/regulation compliance, and training staff members. Quality, Safety, and Competition Quality, Safety, and Competition significantly impact dental care since dental offices are on every corner. Offices are constantly looking for ways to improve and stand out amongst the competition. Regulating agencies, such as OSHA, help maintain workplace safety. This office, in particular, has mandatory OSHA training annually to comply with OSHA requirements.
Future Challenges for Healthcare in the US Rising business in dental costs versus dental insurance companies' contracted rates not reflecting that. The providers need to see more a reimbursement for their time and supplies. We manage now by accepting fewer insurances and managing our supply costs. Technology and advancements in medicine prove to be a challenge as we try and get insurance to cover more. Until then, try to get the patients to buy in and believe in the best possible care for them. Evolution Endodontics and Periodontics prioritizes the best technology and doctors to provide the best patient care. Unfortunately, patients tend to go off what insurance dictates instead of the doctors. Political Influence Politics/Government is typically present in the insurance companies, and what they dictate we can charge patients if we choose to work with them. Healthcare administrators like Ashley want to offer patients the best treatment; however, new and innovative procedures often need to be covered benefits. Ashley insists that insurance is behind the times on what they cover.
Current Role in Healthcare Delivery Public health focuses on safeguarding and improving the mental, physical, and social well-being of the whole community. However, the government has the responsibility to public health, such as implementing healthcare regulatory agencies like the CDC. It's the state's responsibility to provide healthcare for its citizens. Regardless of education, work environment, food accessibility, housing, water sanitation, etc., it’s the responsibility of the state and federal government to prevent epidemiology. The spread of disease is significant in dentistry and proper sterilization of instruments, operatories, and other machinery. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), all practices are urged to use appropriate forms of infection and control protocols. This was implemented by the CDC and ADA in 1993 with updated guidelines to keep up with scientific information. The CDC also advises specific use of instruments and machinery approved by the FDA. These instruments are manufactured by companies such as Hu-friendy, Nobel, Straumann, etc. The US is the only major country that doesn’t offer universal healthcare. In efforts to decrease the amount of individuals without health insurance without penalty or fines, President Obama administration what is known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) instituted March of 2010. The many benefits of this law are increases in insurance coverage, expansion on medicaid coverage, a $0 reduction fee, and allowing young adults to stay on their parents insurance until the age of 26.
