Scenario 3 You are doing an intake on a new client, and they tell you that they recognize you from your church. You do not know “specifically” who they are—but they do seem familiar. How do you respond to this? Sometimes and mostly in small and rural areas, dual relationships could occur unintentionally within your work. For instance, you may end up potentially working with someone whom you knew before, someone who follows you on social media, or you are romantically involved with someone who is related to your new client, and you didn't know about it previously. When a client joins the worker's church, or community aerobics class without their knowledge, unexpected conflicts can develop. This could cause the worker to struggle with confidentiality, it would be a conflict of interest and make it complicated to work with the client and potentially cause them harm or your profession. The Social Workers Ethical responsibilities to clients. The standards are Commitment to clients, self-determination, informed consent, competence, cultural competence, conflicts of interest, privacy and confidentiality, access to records, sexual relationships, physical contact, sexual harassment, derogatory language, payment for services, clients who lack decision-making capacity, interruption of services, referral for services and termination of services (NASW 2021). When considering joining a dual relationship the most important and pertinent issues to consider are the overall welfare of the client and the efficacy of the treatment (DrZur.com). Making sure to avoid injury and exploitation, conflicts of interest, and the impairment of clinical judgment. Act with competence and integrity while minimizing risk by following the NASW code of Ethics. Only incorporate dual relationships into your work when they are not likely to impair your clinical judgment or create a conflict of interest. In conclusion, personally I would contact my supervisor and refer the client to another colleague. I would do this to prevent any unforeseen issues that could arise in both the clients and my personal and professional relationship. References Code of Ethics: English Links to an external site.
