Post an explanation of whether psychotherapy has a biological basis. Explain how culture, religion, and socioeconomics might influence one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments. Describe how legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy differ from those for individual therapy, and explain how these differences might impact your therapeutic approaches for clients in group, individual, and family therapy. Psychotherapy is a process by which the provider uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment of an individual from a biological, social, cultural, and or religious aspect. Each aspect has its own unique influence, meaning, one has to take into consideration what is more important to the client. The purpose of this discussion is to explain how culture, religion, and socioeconomics might influence one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments. Legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy differ from individual therapy and their impact on therapeutic approaches will also be discussed. From a biological perspective, neuroplasticity plays an important role in the brain’s ability to adapt to life’s experiences (Karim et al., 2021). The brain has the ability to communicate by way of neurotransmitters, giving one the ability to learn and process new information. The use of psychotherapy from an evidence-based approach can successfully change an individual’s way of thinking in a positive way. In other words, “The end result of this type of intervention is a re-elaboration of the whole sense of self and others, through new learning and new experiences that encompass cognitive, emotional, and internal regulation processes, thus producing comprehensive, lasting, measurable physical changes in the brain” (Javanbakht & Alberini, 2019, p. 1). One’s environment can also influence their perspective on psychotherapy treatment culturally, religiously, and socioeconomically. Each component should be taken into consideration when treatment is necessary especially since these are
considered attributes as to whether or not patients receive mental health treatment. One might prefer to seek counseling from their pastor whereas one may think that it is a sin to do so. One study suggested that people with higher educational levels were more likely to seek psychotherapy services than those that were less educated (Halme et al., 2023). Ethical and legal considerations are similar in ways that confidentiality and respect are the same across the board. It is always important to apply the ethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice and respect for people’s dignity for service. Confidentiality is established between the provider and patient whereas a group has to have a formal contract and confidentiality statement that prevents group members from sharing information signed prior to starting sessions. With individual sessions, the provider may have one or two ways to address a problem. For group sessions, the provider may only have to address one issue as well, however, the approach may be different for each individual. In conclusion, psychotherapy is a process that uses a comprehensive approach in treatment that is unique to each person from a biological, cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and environmental perspective. From and ethical and legal perspective, it is important to apply ethical principles and maintain confidentiality and respect for everyone involved. You brought up a great point about how people are deterred from seeking treatment due to discrimination and what might others think of them. There are a number of barriers that explain the unmet needs associated with mental healthcare that include negative stigmas, structural and financial, and impassable services (Halme et al., 2023). As a provider, it is important to identify those barriers to prevent any further mental instability. For example, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community are often faced with challenges especially when there is a desire to feel wanted or accepted within society. When society fails to produce a positive response, there is a feeling of rejection. According to Cheung & Mak (2018), the LGBT community is at a higher risk of suicide and other mental health disorders, often due to labeling or stereotyping.
