What is Bipolar Disorder? Description Bipolar disorder is a disorder of chronic episode of high elevated mood swings (Grison & Gazzaniga,2019). The mental disorder has another name of manic depression. It is known to cause changes in energy, daily moods, active levels, concentration, and function is everyday tasks (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020) This is order is different than the regular high and lows as the mood changes can be extreme. There are two types of bipolar disorders which are Bipolar 1 and Bipolar II Disorder. Types of Bipolar Bipolar I Disorder has extreme elevated moods, known as manic episodes, that can last a week or longer. When a person experiences a manic episode in Bipolar I it makes it harder a person to know what is real, which then leads to hallucinations. If a person with is Treatment Options Some treatments that are given by professionals for this disorder are medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of medication and psychotherapy (National Institute of Mental Health, 2018) The treatment is used to assist in the decreasing of manic and depressive episode of the disorder (Office of Women’s Health, 2018). It is better to not delay treatment as the early in treating the disorder when diagnosed the better it works. Medications: The treatment use of medications helps with balancing moods, as the most common medication is Lithium, that can help stabilize the moods. Lithium is usually combined with quetiapine to work on the elevated moods and help improve the treatment (Grison & Gazzaniga,2019). Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy is used to assist the patients and managing their bipolar disorder symptoms by helping them recognize their own symptoms for when an episode is about to occur (Office on Women’s Health, 2018). Treatments Together: A combination of therapy and medications and be used to treat Bipolar as it can help the patients understand the need for treatment and when an episode is about to occur to help manage the disorder. Symptoms The symptoms of bipolar disorder differ from person to person in one form to another. Typically, in a manic episode a person will experience what is known as a extreme high versus a depressive episode of feeling sad, unable to move or get out of bed, and feeling hopeless (Office on Women’s Health, 2018). The changes in a person’s hormones can severely affect the symptoms of the person as they can become more severe mood swings and higher energy levels. The hormone change can make a depressive episode more severe and can lead to suicide due to the extreme down low feelings.
