Week 4 - Assignment Franklin Okoye Research Design RSC 860 September 2022 Dr. Donovan Wright 1
Introduction Figure 1 This assignment is to discuss how the research topic will bring together world view strategies and methods and to identify the research methods used and its suitability to the research. Research methods and designs seek to gather data from broad assumptions of a researcher’s perspectives and worldview to study a particular topic (Cresswell, 2009). In selecting a specific research methodology and design, the factors that influence the nature of the topic to be studied, the experiences and worldview of the researcher, and the group in which the study would impact are considered (Cresswell, 2009). A qualitative methodology will seek to answer the questions for this research. Two main research questions that this study will aim to respond to are: What impact would risk assessment methodologies make in communicating justification for security Effectiveness of Risk Assessment Methodology Worldview: Social Constructivist Quantitative Phenomenological Inquiry Strategy Research Method: Questions Qualitative Design 2
investment in cloud service organizations? What are the perceptions of cybersecurity risk managers on the effectiveness of the use of risk assessment methodologies in risk management investment proposals? “Qualitative research is a means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem” (Cresswell, 2009, p.22). Cresswell’s qualitative research definition, therefore, is most suitable for the research questions because it aims to understand the effectiveness of risk assessment methodologies and cloud service-provider decision-makers’ expectations of its application and effectiveness. There are five different qualitative research designs or approaches as enumerated by Creswell (Creswell, 2007). He noted that research approaches are selected according to the approach best suited for a topic. The qualitative approaches identified by Creswell (2007) are narrative, phenomenological, grounded theory, ethnography, and case studies. As this research has chosen the phenomenological approach or design as the best suited to answering the raised research questions, it is equally not out of order to explore why other approaches were not suited to the topic of study. The narrative approach focuses on how social, cultural, and environmental factors shape individuals’ experiences (Haydon & Van Der Riet, 2017). While this research will explore participants’ perspectives on the topic, it will not pursue their lived experiences as they will not be relevant to the study. The grounded theory approach moves to propound a theory from the collective experiences of the participants (Creswell, 2007). It differs from the phenomenological, which only explores participants’ experiences without synthesizing the experiences to formulate a theory, Creswell (2007) noted. In 3
