Factors that lead to poor relationships are latchkey children, marital strife and divorce, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and death. Latchkey children routinely spend time alone in home without adult supervision. Children who are raised in homes that are full of conflict and hostility between parents experience a high level of stress. Drug and alcohol abuse can hinder a person’s self-control and a parent’s ability to be responsible and a nurturing parent. HIV/AIDS is sexually transmitted, and both parents are likely to be affected, so it leaves the child at risk of being orphaned by the disease. Dealing with the death of loved ones is one of the most difficult aspects of life and there is no way to protect children from this painful experience. 5. Why is it critical for a parent to be involved in their children’s education? It is critical for a parent to be involved in their children’s education because it is important for a child to have knowledge. Parents often help toddlers develop early academic skills by reading books to them or helping them learn their ABCs and numbers. When a child starts school, parents should communicate with their child’s teachers and keep track of their academic progress. A parents constant involvement in their child's lives can be a good thing, when their child is still a child and not so much after they have grown up. A new trend has sprung where parents feel it necessary to ,not only, take their child to college but to stay there with them.
In this chapter it is important as a social worker to recognize child maltreatment. “Maltreatment refers to physical abuse, sexual abuse, and psychological abuse and neglect.”(Ashman & Hull, 2015) There are specific clues to recognize for maltreatment as a social worker. Physical abuse is when a child is being harmed physically such as, a child being beat to an extreme by their parent or guardian. By involve parent in the school life will be a positive influence upon pupils' programs and development. This included help in classrooms and on educational visits, and attendance at meetings to discuss children's progress. Parent involvement in pupils' educational development within the home was also clearly beneficial. Types of abuse include neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional, educational and medical abuse. National percentage rates for children experiencing these types of abuse are as follows; 37 percent of neglect, 44 percent of physical abuse, 27 percent of sexual abuse, and 10 percent of other abuse (National Children’s Alliance, 2016). Risk factors of child abuse include poverty, lack of education, marital problems, moving homes, violence between other family members, lack of support, social isolation, unemployment, and inadequate housing (Homeland Security, 2016).
According to the WHO organization, the definition of abuse is “physical and emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation that results in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, development or dignity.” ("WHO | Child maltreatment," 2018). Research shows that infants experience the highest rate of victimization, with 24.4 in 1,000 suffering from maltreatment. Infants are more likely to be abused if they have physical handicaps, are mentally retarded, or were premature. Uneven sleep and eating patterns also cause a higher rate of abuse. Infants are much more fragile than older children and thus more likely to be injured. “Shaken baby syndrome is the leading cause of death in child abuse cases in the United States”

Child abuse is the harming of a child that causes extreme injury, emotional instability, or even death. Neglect is a form of child abuse where a parent does not provide the proper care that a child needs to successfully grow and develop. Child molestation is another form of child abuse, and involves an adult or older adolescent using a child for their own sexual pleasure. There are thousands of cases being reported every year. However, we may never know the exact number of cases.
The school administrators, teachers and parents can participate in joint planning, goal setting, and definition of roles, needs sensing, and setting school standards with a written policy (Plevyak, 2003). Teachers can encourage parent involvement by sending letters home inviting parents to visit to classroom and have parent- teacher day where they communicate and plan their child’s educational goals. The school administrators can have an in-service day for training their teachers in communicating with parents that may have difficulty understanding English and the importance of participating with their child’s educational needs. Children that have their parents’ involvement in their education will enhance their child’s intrinsic motivation by offering them choices and the opportunity for self-direction by setting their own educational goals (Bojczyk, Shriner, & Shriner, 2012).
The first factor that’s has an impact on student learning is parenting. Parenting makes critical contributions to a child’s achievement in school. Playing math and reading games with elementary school students, helping middle school students with their homework, and establishing appropriate boundaries for teenagers are foundations for success in school. When parents are involved, regardless of income or background, children are more likely to earn higher grades and scores, enroll in higher-level programs, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, graduate, and even go on to postsecondary education.
