For as long as I can remember, I have always loved taking part in the cinematic experience. Every aspect of it, including purchasing my ticket, eating buttery popcorn, and watching every trailer before the film completely and totally encapsulates me to this very day. So, it should come as no surprise that at the ripe age of 21, I am currently working at AMC Southdale, a high-end movie theater in Edina, MN. There are certain perks that come with being an employee at AMC that benefit cinephiles such as myself exceptionally well, including free tickets to the movies. Sufficed to say, when March 11 came around and 10 Cloverfield Lane was released in theaters, I was more than ready to take advantage of my free pass to the movies and go see …show more content…
After paying for two ICEES, my boyfriend and I went up to the theater’s second level and sat down in the VIP booth, a separate, boxed-off section of the auditorium with reclining seats. I eagerly settled in, anxiously and excitedly waiting to see how J.J. Abrams continued the anthology of his 2008 movie, Cloverfield, an alien-monster movie recorded “shaky-cam”style (he has been very ambiguous on how the films connect…always and forever keeping fans at bay). Even before the previews began, I was theorizing on whether or not there would be aliens, if John Goodman’s character was telling the truth about an attack, and what it was the woman saw outside the window.

10 Cloverfield Lane was a highly anticipated film for J.J. Abrams fans once the well-kept secret of its existence was revealed (a characteristic the production company Bad Robot is known for) mere months before its debut. The tagline for the film, “Monsters come in many forms”, as well as the trailer were both very ambiguous in nature and left the viewers with several unanswered questions. It turns out, this was the perfect way to watch the movie, with very little knowledge about it. The film follows the story of Michelle, a fashion design student who, after running out on her fiancée, is involved in a car crash and ends up in
The 20th Century was home to many important events in history, one of the most memorable being The Great Depression. Unemployment was at an all time high, businesses were forced to shut down, and suicide rates were through the roof. New York City was no exception. 213 of it’s 253 theaters were forced to close, putting hundreds of thousands of theater people out of work. In these devastating times, a hopeless yet admirable organization known as the Federal Theatre Project (FTP) was created by request of President Roosevelt. Originally created to preserve music and art, this project consumed government funds, was plagued by censorship, and was blatantly biased in social issues, with the end result being far from it’s original goal.
Paranormal is the next big thing these days. We are not talking about Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or even Twilight! We have the aliens--a topic that is unique and new! But in here, it fit the part perfectly! In Monsters Due on Maple Street, a typical small town was faced with electricity loss or so they said. Because of that one event, words are spoken and the true color was revealed! In the end, Pete Van Horn has died. Charlie and many other have been hurt. The damages have been made. There are fairy tales like Snow White and Three Little Pigs in which we know who was behind all the crisis but in here only the audience knows. Not only that but that one cliffhanger of the mastermind behind this will lie forever unknown to Maple Street.

The Broadway Theatre will discuss possible shows for the 2016-2017 season at a play selection committee meeting October 5. This is open to the public and will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Broadway Theatre 216 East Broadway.
Many responders would believe that this movie is a misleading act based on Mike Moore’s self-promotion. When looking beneath the surface however, we can see

La La Land is very good. I saw it twice in theaters, which is odd for me because my preferred method of consuming media is illegally pirating it (NSA, I know you’re reading this, but this confession is not admissible in court, ok? ok.) Anyway, the second time I saw La La Land it was an 8:00 showing on a Wednesday in Cedar Rapids that I had to scramble to get to because I left work and didn’t get any supper. So we stopped at Hy Vee, picked up some to go boxes of chinese food, and tried to figure out the best way to smuggle the food into a theater. Thankfully, I was with a girl who was infamous for her mom purses. Precariously setting the containers vertically into her purse, the contents of which I unceremoniously dumped in the back seat, and draping a scarf over the top of the food
This movie was very different from most of its predecessors in the sense that it challenged traditional narrative and technical elements of classic Hollywood cinema. One of the ways it bucked tradition was in in the fact that the
In his sci-fi drama Signs, M. Night Shyamalan demonstrates personal spiritual development alongside the thrilling occurrence of an alien invasion. Using parallel storylines, Shyamalan presents the journey of the Hess family, while the reoccurring theme of coincidence vs. destiny serves as a guide to test one man's faith in God. By addressing a religious tone in accordance with the presence of the aliens, the director establishes a relationship between contrasting philosophies. Family issues are apparent throughout this film, and Shyamalan presents personal conflict in a way that develops tension from multiple perspectives. Prominently, the movie uses Colleen's accident as a dividing line between Graham and Morgan, by bringing upon many
On Tuesday Oct 25, I went to attend a Film Screening and watched “That Strange Summer” by Geri Alumit Zeldes who is a filmmaker, journalist and associate professor at Michigan State University. After watching the film, there is a Q&A session and a lot of meaningful questions were asked.
Come down for dinner!” My head snapped up from its position, and I hastily wiped the drool threatening to drip from my chin. I pressed the pause button, hopped down from the bed, and made my way to the dining room—clumsily trying to imitate “cool” moves I saw in the movie with my small stature. This was definitely not the first time a situation like this happened. When I was younger, one of my most prevalent hobbies involved watching movies almost every single day. I genuinely entranced by the heartwarming characters in Toy Story, the exquisite visuals of Harry Potter, and most evidently, the unique and thrilling storyline of Mulan. One of the main reasons why the entertainment industry had been so successful in the past was because of its ability to capture the hearts of many in a powerful, ingenious way. Movies are, essentially, manifestations of imagination. They are full of diverse settings, plots, and characters to indulge in. When a respectable movie is playing, the viewers are agreeing to subject themselves to a few hours of escapism, and it is the movie’s ultimate duty to make that time worthwhile. However, movies require effort, time, and money; when one of these factors receives a cut, the quality of production also diminishes in
Among New American Ghost Cinema, one can witness the re-emergence of an interesting sub-genre: the Found Footage Cinema. We can observe this new fascination in many modern horror films such as 2008’s Cloverfield, 2009's Paranormal Activity, and 2011's Apollo 18. Digging below the surface of a literal reading of some of these movies, one finds a genre that can be far more intelligent than what meets the public eye. For example, within Cloverfield, the screams and images of smoke heaving through the city of Manhattan hint at post-September 11th. To understand the growing popularity of Found Footage Cinema and why we discover these political undertones, this paper will examine The Blair Witch Project (1999, Myrick and Sanchez) in the
go too, the cost of the movie, and visiting the concession stand, which is over-rated and over-priced, but I do love some theater pop-corn. Assume a family of two (one adult) (one child)
The good thing about films is that we not only have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of different genres, but also compare them and understand their purpose in the world. The Horror genre has used the basic principles throughout time, and as a result, films of this type have not proven to be as timeless as another genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy. At first, these two genres might at times seem similar as they have at several occasions been blended together, but their basic, common theme serves different meanings about humans. I shall compare and contrast these two genres and focus on both classic films and modern films. From the Horror genre perspective I shall discuss Psycho (1960) and The Mist (2007), while in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre I will examine 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), and Serenity (2005). Although the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre and the Horror Genre share some similarities, the differences lie in their focus on human progress.
There is a broad variety of types of theaters available- conventional theaters, IMAX and drive in’s. Going
