Consciousness can be defined as one’s awareness of their actions, thoughts, or surroundings. It is the ability to understand things beyond our eyes. And what I mean by that is one can see things through their eyes, but consciousness allows one to comprehend it on a deeper level. It leads to how we behave, how we function. The definition of community when I google it, is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would describe community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests. In IGE 120, the course theme is consciousness and community, which is why I chose to define them before going into further depth. Consciousness and community are themes that reoccur in …show more content…
You’re mine! I am yours and you are mine… I see you. Always! Everywhere! Forever!” (Shaffer, pg. 105). Equus is his God, therefore when Alan is about to commit a sin he knows Equus will be disappointed and jealous. He was conscious of this, so in order to prevent the disappointment from happening, he blinded the horses so they would not watch him any longer. Alan being conscious of the consequences his actions would lead to reminds me of the reading Gilgamesh by Herbert Mason. Gilgamesh’s arrogance led him on a journey that he wasn 't quite prepared for, knowing that it might lead to death. Gilgamesh tells his friend, Enkidu, “Why are you worried about death… I will go ahead of you, and if I die I will at least have the reward of having people say: He died in war” (Mason, pg.29). Like Alan Strang, Gilgamesh is conscious of what the outcome might be but goes ahead and does it anyway. Martin Dysart is Alan Strang’s psychiatrist and although he acknowledges Alan’s sickness, he admires his bravery. "He 's full of misery and fear. He was dangerous...But that boy has known a passion more ferocious than I have felt in any second of my life. And let me tell you something: I envy it" (Shaffer, pg. 80). This shows that Dysart is conscious of his life but he isn’t happy about it. This leads him to be envy of Alan and makes him question if his career is humane. He believes that as a psychiatrist, he is taking away Alan Strang’s passion of horses by labeling
A factual definition of consciousness; Consciousness is “2: the state of being characterized by sensation, emotion, volition, and thought: 3: the totality of conscious states of an individual.”(Pp. 1). One is able to physically feel, understand emotion, is a willing individual, and are
Consciousness is what is used to define the non-physical mind. It encompasses thoughts, feelings and emotions among other attributes. Consciousness creates a picture of the mind being vague, Vast, mysterious and something that cannot be seen by the naked eye but is present nevertheless. You can’t slice open someone’s brain and see what they are feeling, or dreaming or thinking. You can only know that by observation likes someone crying, smiling, laughing or showing some form of physical reaction or by someone simply telling you how they are feeling. Consciousness is part of the mind-body problem that we read about with Descartes where he believes that we have a thinking mind and a physical body. Both are present but two separate parts.
Consciousness is a state of awareness. This includes a person’s feelings, sensations, ideas, and perceptions. There are many different states of consciousness.
What is a community? A community is a group of people who care about each other. In “The Outsiders” the greasers have a special kind of community. In fact I wouldn't call it a community, they are more of a family.
Community A community is a group of people interacting in a meaningful way with regard to something they share in common. It used to be that a community, in order to function as a group and interact, had to be in the same geographic location or at least within driving distance. Since the internet has now become so widely available we find that people with common interests and goals are reaching across vast distances to interact with each other. There is even language translation software available that can translate other languages into one's own.
Community can be defined in many ways. According to Meriam Webster (n.d), there are 12 different ways that community can be defined. Community can best be defined as “a group of people who live in the same area (such as a city, town, or neighborhood)” ("Community," n.d). To most people, community is the area and people that surround the place they live and/or work. Community health is defined by Stanhope and Lancaster (2014) as “the meeting of collective needs through identification of problems and management of behaviors within the community itself and between the community and the larger society.” Community as
Consciousness is the state or condition of being conscious. A sense of one's personal or collective identity, especially the complex of attitudes, beliefs, and sensitivities held by or considered characteristic of an individual or a group. There are several different stages of consciousness. Waking consciousness, altered states of consciousness and sleep.
What does community mean? Is it a group of people who live in a distinguished area? Is it a racial, or a religious group? Merriam-Webster describes it as three fold. The first definition is: a group of people living in the same area. The second: a group of people with similar interests. And finally: a group of nations.
The term "Community"
When presented with the word community I think comradery, a group of people whom give one a sense of belonging. According to Webster’s dictionary a community is defined as “a body of people having common rights, privileges, or interests, or living in the same place under the same laws and regulations. According to that definition I felt like it was easy for me to identify with various communities all at once.
The Oxford English Dictionary defined the word community in two pages worth of different meanings. The earlier definitions (from the 17th century) defined community as “the quality of appertaining to or being held by all in common; joint or common ownership, tenure, liability” and a “common character, quality in common, commonness, agreement, identity.” Then in the later definitions (used in later times like in
A community is defined as groups of individuals who enjoy interacting or living within the same space.
Consciousness, on the other hand, is the first person self-awareness of one’s mental states. One knows and understands exactly what they are
In the field of psychology there are many terms related to consciousness. Consciousness has three main functions, restricting attention, creating a mental meeting place, and it creates a mental model of the world around us. Restricting attention is what keeps the brain from being overwhelmed by stimulation. It does this by processing what we notice and what we think about, this process is called selective attention. The degree of selective attention that someone has can vary based on the person and their ability to focus. An example of selective attention would be, when you are hungry, you are more likely to give attention the smell of food rather than the smell of something else. The mental meeting place is where sensation combines with memory,
According to the online Princeton Wordnetweb dictionary, consciousness is “an alert cognitive state in which you are aware of yourself and your situation”
