In Nolan's The Dark Knight, the Joker disrupts order in Gotham City when he has district attorney, Harvey Dent, and his girlfriend Rachel set up to explosives. While being saved by Batman, and after realizing Rachel will die, half of Dent's body is ignited by the explosion, leaving him with horrific scars. This mutilation, combined with Rachel's murder, leads Dent to start causing chaos in Gotham. Another story of loss occurs in Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs when FBI initiate Clarice Starling begins working the case of Buffalo Bill, a homicidal maniac with a strange facination with winged insects. She gets help from killer psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter, to stop Bill on her own, while he analyzes about her childhood and fathers death. Bodily …show more content…
He is confronted by the Joker, and as he approaches Dent’s bed, the enraged Harvey tries to free himself from his restraints. Joker loosens the leather bindings from Dent as they have a conversation about how the Joker was not the one who abducted Dent and Rachel or rigged the charges because he was in prison: JOKER: So when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know I'm telling the truth… You were a schemer. You had plans. Look where it got you... I'm an agent of chaos. And you know the thing about chaos, Harvey? It’s fair. HARVEY: [Looking at rigged Coin] You live, [He turns the coin over, The flip side is deeply charred] you die. …show more content…
Starling states that she was alone after her father's death since her mother was not around indicating she had to get over what happened on her own. The cocoon signifies the entrapment she felt as a child being forced inside a cage of her own pain. However, like a moth, Clairece is able to break out from the cocoon of pain that once trapped her transforming her like a larve stuck on the ground to a moth that rises above all others. Without the process of grief that she went through because of her father's death, it’s not clear if she would have taken the same path in life and thus may never have become such a motivated student. Claireces’ traumatic childhood is the catalyst that compels her to help others so they won't go through the same pain that she once
In the view of author Kevin Mahadeo, one of the most insane tricks the Joker had pulled was when he had captured members of the Bat-Family and had Alfred serve them up some platters topped with their faces which he had cut off. (Mahadeo) This is a representation of how truly insane and twisted the Joker was. Although the joker was quite insane, some people have learned to love his evil ways because of how clever and inventive he was while he came up with tricks. Despite the Jokers insane tricks, his trickery is shown throughout today’s culture because of how thought out and clever he can
Another common thing that the Joker does is that he attempts to conceal the true reasons for his actions. In other words, the Joker uses defense mechanisms to distance himself from reality as a means to protect himself from the horrid things he has done (Friedman & Schustack, 2009). He demonstrates the specific defence mechanism of rationalization and he does this by trying to justify murdering Harvey Dent's, a pivotal character to the film's plot, girlfriend. He explains to Dent that her death was not his fault and he does such things (i.e., killing innocent people) to show others how pathetic they are for believing that they have control in their lives “ “ (De La Noy & Nolan,
Moore continues his effort as the story unravels in a later scene where The Joker captures Gordon and shows him photographs of Barbara, who is gravely wounded and stripped naked. Moore vividly illustrates Gordon’s anger and shock, causing the readers to sympathize with his feeling of despair and perceive that The Joker’s plan to force Gordon “into a psychotic break” (Wooldridge) may be succeeding. In this scene, The Joker has Gordon trapped on his Ghost Train ride, Gordon’s face in shock as it dawns on him that the person in the horrific images is his own daughter. Moore presents Gordon’s face in an extreme close-up, which is “a framing in which the scale of the object shown is very large” (Yale Film Studies). The only other thing that can be seen is half the face of The Joker’s minion, who attempts to keep Gordon down; everything else is red, except for their eyes and teeth. Moore uses this particular framing method so that the audience can see Gordon’s aged, appalled, and unkempt face, emphasizing his distress and his loss of control. The red on the faces of the characters in this panel highlights the emotions that Gordon feels: hopelessness, shock, and dismay. The yellow eyes and teeth underscore the horrified look on Gordon’s face. The Joker has forced Gordon to realize that his family has been irreparably harmed, and that he is unable to do anything about it. Moore
Harvey Dent wanted to be district attorney and be able to control crime. He wanted to be everything Batman couldn’t be and have power over crime. This can easily be compared to Macbeth wanting to have power. What makes Harvey Dent a tragic figure is the fight he has with his inner self. Harvey Dent had said “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”, this is ironic because it foreshadows future events.
The Joker has no alter ego. He walks around the way he is with his deformed face full of scars and in some versions, with his bright colored hair and bleached skin, always with that maniac, chilling laughter which always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He has no personal agenda to all the brutality he inflicts, no thirst for revenge or materialistic goals made him reach this point. He lives to dismantle the codes the society lives by and all he hopes for is to rip apart the expected codes of morality, so the people can then be free of any faith, any belief of right or wrong. He creates situations for the people of his town
Daniel Blick’s The Dark Knight: What it tells about our own nature, posted in Movie Pilot, discusses The Dark Knight’s implications on the nature of humanity, stating that our nature depends on the choices we make. Blick uses the choices that Batman and Harvey Dent make in response to Rachael Dawes’ death as an example. Rachael

The twist comes when, just as Wayne decides that he must comply and let the truth out, Harvey Dent proclaims that he is Batman. At first this works but then the Joker starts killing people
When you think of psychology what is the the first name that comes to mind? My guess is that you thought of Sigmund Freud. Even though none of his theories of dreams or sexuality have any empirical evidence, he is still one of the most influential figures in all of philosophy. One of Freud’s ideas that does have substance is the idea that our minds are dynamic and contain both conscious and unconscious memories, thoughts, and desires. Freud labeled these phenomena the id, ego, and superego. While the nuances of this theory are complex and somewhat monotonous, they are brought to life in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The chaotic and childish joker (id), the pure and valiant Harvey Dent (superego), and the one responsible for finding a balance between the two, Batman (ego).
Joker’s backstory begins as an engineer who decides to quit his job at Ace Chemicals Co to become a comedian. After failing in his attempt to keep his pregnant wife, Jeannie, afloat, he agrees to help two criminals rob the playing card company next door. The police soon inform the ‘soon-to-be Joker’ of the death of his wife due to a household accident. The other criminals strong-arm him into continuing with the plan. Once at the plant, the criminals make him wear a mask, later recognized as Red Hood. Unknown to the engineer, the disguise is secretly being used by the criminals to frame him for the crime.

The Joker’s constant twitching and licking of his lips as possible evidence of an oral fixation and would want to ask the Joker about his relationship with his mother. If we go ahead and believe that the Joker really did have and hate his abusive alcoholic father, then we would explore the conflict between the Joker and his father and as a result, the underdevelopment of a superego. In the second narration of the origins of his scars, the Joker tells Rachel that he once had a wife that was cut up by mobsters and that in an effort to make her feel better, he carves his own face and was devastated when she leaves him. If we believe this version of the story, then his anger from his father
