Determine whether the study is experimental or quasi-experimental. Explain how you know. Where is the evidence? In the study conducted by Barck-Holst, Nilsonne, Akerstedt, and Hellgren (2015) they completed a longitudinal study to see if social workers in Sedish social services would have an effect of decreaing their stress if the working hours were reduced. This longitudinal study is considered a quasit-ecperimental desing because the researchers presented a control group on the study to be compared the effects of reduced working hours against full tme working hours. Capella University (2017a) states that a quasi-experimental design uses convenience sampling within a cause and effect design. Barck-Holst et al. (2015) shows evidence that …show more content…
This study included the final organization to have social workers be a part of both the intervention and controlled group. Bark-Holst et al. (2015) had both groups signed a written consent, in addition, to the intervention group agreeing to not work any other hours outside of their organization while participating in this study.
Describe the specific type of research design that was used and discuss why it is considered experimental or quasi-experimental.
The research designed included seven organizations that included social worker, social work managers, and social worker assistants. The organizations selected based on the convenience sampling method that totaled 204 participants that agreed to be included in either the intervention group, the controlled group, or both (Barck-Holst et al., 2015). The study included each participant to complete a baseline survey, and two follow-up surveys that were about six months to a year apart. This study is considered a quasi-experimental time series designed based on the convenience sampling method used to compare a controlled group against an intervention group to evaluate the effects of stress against reduced working hours.
Analyze the scientific merit of the selected design. How might you have designed this study differently?
The scientific merit of this study is high because
3- How would you make it an experimental (rather than correlational) study (it might help to be specific here as well and define the two types of studies in your
It is clear that social workers play an important role in society; it would therefore make sense to ensure that the working conditions of social workers are kept to a high standard. Without these good working standards it is likely that social workers might be affected by the job related stresses that are inherent to jobs dealing with troubled people. These high job stresses may lead to greater turn over and unwillingness amongst students to become social workers. Consequently the methods by which social workers and their respective employers have been discussed in this essay and include things like being given greater autonomy over their own scheduling and how they choose to deal with clients. Social workers may also be able to improve their
1.What two factors did you investigate in your procedure, and why did you choose to compare these two factors?
· What conclusions did the study reach? Are the conclusions appropriate? Why or why not?
In a laboratory study of sleep deprivation, researchers employed a variety of techniques to keep
Method: The type of article would be an empirical study. The purpose of the study was to examine
Box 3.2: Why do it this way? is especially relevant, as it considers an important advantage of the experimental method. Chapter 6: No experiments are discussed in this chapter, however, the essay question requires you to discuss the value of experiments. Consider if there are certain aspects of human behaviour and/or performance that cannot be meaningfully investigated using experiments. What are the alternative methods of studying behaviour? Sections 2 and 3 of Chapter 6 are relevant in this respect.
Instructions: This is a group activity that you will start in class and complete at home. For each of the following, note, whether the research design used is an experiment, a quasi-experiment, or a correlational approach and why. If a study is an experiment, identify the independent variable and the dependent variable. Please type your answers in complete sentences.
The study was experimental because: 1) the researchers did manipulate the independent variables, and 2) Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups.
What is the research method (i.e.: survey, participant observation, experiment, secondary sources) used by the researchers?
a. The study was designed as an experimental research by using independent and dependent variables.
The method used for the study was quantitative, this was chosen rather than a qualitative as this deals with facts and figures and is an investigatory type of study. This can be either experimental or non experiment. Experimental is the method used in this study which looks at cause and effect, and involves dependent and independent variables. (Balnaves and Caputi, 2001) A qualitative study can be described as interpretive which deals with personal thoughts and feelings (Flick, 2009).
Quasi-experimental research, which was once considered ‘flawed’ and less superior to true experimental research, has become increasingly popular over the last three to four decades in many areas, especially the social sciences (Coolican, 2014, p. 121). It differs from true experimental research design in the way that quasi-experimental research doesn’t involve random assignment of participants to groups and often has less control over the independent variable (Follmer Greenhoot, 2003, p. 94; Coolican, 2014, p. 121). An
3. At this point the general direction of the research has probably made clear which of the various research or design types is most appropriate. For example, it may be decided that a survey, or an experiment, or some other design should be used.
A study design is the procedure that guides a researcher on how to collect, analyze and interpret observations. It is a logical model that guides the investigator while he navigates through the various stages of the research. Study types can be classified severally depending on the research strategy employed. A study type can be non-interventional that is ‘observational’ where a researcher just observes and analyses researchable objects or situations without intervening. Non-interventional study designs can be exploratory, descriptive or comparative. A study can also be
