Outsiders: Misjudged or Misunderstood? What does being outsider mean? Does it mean being left out of being different? People have often felt like an outsider at one point in their life, and wonder why. Are outsiders misjudged or misunderstood? These two terms meet at a crossroads, and are commonly misinterpreted. Misjudging someone is when you make a solid assumption or conclusion about them, whether it be on their looks our how they act. Being misunderstood is when someone interprets you for someone you are not. Based on both of these definitions, outsiders are simply misjudged. We can see examples of outsiders being misjudged both in literature and in modern day society. “The Metamorphosis”, a short story written by Franz Kafka, tells …show more content…
Jordan, who was unarmed, was sitting in the front passenger’s seat, with four other unarmed teens, including Jordan’s brother, in the car. Roy Oliver shot at the car with a rifle. A bullet broke through the front passenger’s window and hit Jordan. Shortly after, he was rushed to a hospital, where he died from gunshot injuries. This story is one of many that has happened just in 2017. A total of 6 million african americans were killed by police officers in the year 2016. One possible explanation for the racial disparities is that police tend to patrol high-crime neighborhoods, which are disproportionately black. That means they are going to be generally more likely to initiate a policing action, from traffic stops to more serious arrests, against a black person who lives in these areas. This goes to show how misjudged most of modern day society is. More and more people are judged on their appearance or in this situation, where they live. However, one could argue that outsiders are just misunderstood. For example, referring back to the last paragraph, the african american culture is misunderstood because of a stereotype they have always had hanging over their shoulders. Or even back to “The Metamorphosis”, Gregor was misunderstood because his family at first became blind and relied on Gregor for the support of Welfare, but they soon realized that Gregor was the happiness of the family. Outsiders could also be misunderstood because some people chose to be outsiders
To begin with, the idea that being an outsider is universal is shown in the story Encountering the Others when the author says, “All of us inhabitants of our planet are others for others.” (pg 236) This quote shows how any stranger is considered an outsider to you and you are considered an outsider to them which is an example how being an outsider is universal. Furthermore, another example of this is show in the story, Revenge of the Geeks when the author states, “Taylor Swift's classmates left the lunch table as soon
An outsider is someone who is not accepted or is isolated from society. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is set in the 1930’s, where society considered many people as outsiders. During this period, many people were racist, sexist and prejudice towards disabled people. This is shown with several characters in the novel including Crooks, Curly’s wife and Candy who are all considered as outsiders in this novel, since they each had something that the society at that time were prejudice towards.
An outsider is a person who is rejected by others due to being unusual or peculiar. Often that people who are outcast are ostracized and shunned. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a novel about how young boys unattended on an island become savage and corrupt as they try to get back home. The novel explores the details of Piggy, one of the major characters, who is very different from the rest of the boys. Annoying and whiny, he is eventually ostracized by most of the other boys who think he is an unnecessary burden to their survival. Piggy is often bullied and made fun of for his obese body and intelligence. There are an abundance of adjectives that can be used to describe Piggy, but the one word that fits Piggy the most is outsider.
There is a bountiful number of outsiders in our society and we are wondering, why are they outsiders and what have they done to become that, what defines them? Outsiders in our society are simply misunderstood and people do not understand them, hence them being outsiders. The reasons that seem to make outsiders misunderstood is that they do not like or do the popular stuff at the time. Also, those who are outsiders are seen as people that are “different,” but really are misunderstood. Outsiders are just misunderstood in society and not purposely being pushed out.
Are outsiders simply those who are misjudged or misunderstood? Whether outsiders are misjudged or misunderstood depends on whose perspective you view this question from. When you look at someone you are developing an opinion of them, and you may be misjudging them by deciding they are an outsider. While when you are the person being judged you feel that you are just simply misunderstood. You may have experienced one or probably both of these perspectives. Moreover to truly understand what it means to be an outsider you need to understand both of these perspectives.
Everyone is different in terms of appearance and life circumstances, so feeling like an outsider is bound to happen at least once during one’s life. In ‘Sonnet, With Bird’, the author felt like an outsider because of his race. “I am the only Indian in this country right now” (Alexie 214). He didn’t think that he fit in because of his skin color, and he is not alone in this feeling. People all over the world feel like outsiders because of how they look. Another thing that people can feel like an outsider because of is their life situation. Because of their economic class, the Kelvey children in ‘The Doll’s House’ felt like outsiders compared to the seemingly more well off children. “...the Kelveys were shunned by everybody” (Mansfield 203). Just because of an insignificant thing like social class, one can be made to feel like an outsider.
What is an outsider? An outsider is a person who is not excepted by or is isolated by society. Have you ever been an “outsider”? Everyone experiences a situation where they weren’t able to fit in. The feeling of not being able to fit it is universal. Not everyone is the same and in certain situations you may not be able to bond with everyone. Everyone is focused on being judged or being the person who is judging someone. If you are not like everyone in your society group, those people don’t except you. Nowadays our society feels that if you aren’t up to people’s expectations, you are known to be an “outsider”. Being an outsider is universal because not everyone is social, not everyone can afford nice things and not everyone is popular.
An outsider is someone who stands out from the crowd. They have their own beliefs, their own way or thinking. Standing out is often thought of in a negative way, but it can bring along many positive things. During the time period of Martin Luther King Jr., there were many protestors who began to stand up for themselves and their race. Even though many people did it, there were only a few people who started the movement, and those people, were outsiders. Two people who were outsiders from that time period were Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks. They stood against normal beliefs and tried to change the way of life, which is what many outsiders do. An outsider is not simply someone who is misjudged or misunderstood.
Being an outsider is considered to be someone who is isolated and disconnected from others. This isolation can result in many tragic outcomes, one being depression and in other cases even worse. In the Modernist short story, The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka portrays a character who has been treated like a bug before his physical metamorphosis which caused him to make one very bad decision.
Even though Card believes outsiders feels excluded, they are created when they fail to conform to social norms. An outsider is created when one does not fit in with society’s standards. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Clarisse McClellan is alienated by her peers because her behavior does not reflect on what her community deems as acceptable. '''Oh, they don’t miss me,'she said. '' I’m antisocial, they say.
According to a Washington Post database of lethal police shootings 24 unarmed black men have been shot and killed by police so far this year. This means one a black man dies every nine days. Three unarmed black men were shot and killed in the month of April alone. All three shootings were either caught on tape or reported on local TV. The 24 unarmed black men that were killed compose a startling small amount of the 585 people shot and killed by police. According to The Post database. Most of those killed were white or Hispanic, and a good number of all races were armed. However, according to Wesley, black men accounted for 40 percent of the 60 unarmed deaths, even though they make up just 6 percent of the U.S. population.
An ‘outsider’ relates to a person who is ostracised, does not belong to a particular group and is unaccepted. Director-writer Amy Heckerling portrayed characters such as Tai/Cher as the ‘outsider’ of her film ‘Clueless’ in the same way, S.E Hinton manifest Ponyboy Curtis and the gang, Greasers as the outcast of her novel ‘The Outsiders’. The Outsiders is a successful exploration and understanding of people who are unlike.
Their eccentricities may not be bad, but they still do not always allow somebody to fit in under all circumstances. To go along with the fact that everybody has differences, everyone can clearly see that some people stand out as outsiders more than others. People can be seen as outsiders because their differences are so prominent, but they do not automatically assume that everyone else can be an outsider too. For example, in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester is looked at with shame and seen as an outsider because everybody knows of her sin. The people treated Hester as an outsider because she literally wore her sin on her chest, but in reality Dimmesdale was just as bad as her, but he was the only one who viewed himself as an outsider.
Carson, I agree with you, but I think an outsder is more than that. Being an outsider can mean that nobody accepts them. They are not only left out but are not noticed. Poeple think they are different then themselves so they ignore them or they bully them. Ousiders are not considered "normal" to society in that area. Carson, your definition was great
Some might consider outsiders strange or unusual, But outsiders can bring a much need change in society. Outsiders have never got the respect they deserve, they haven't been treat the same because of skin color or their personalities.
