INTRODUCTION
This assignment is about assessments and important of assessments. Assessment is important component for students’ progress. Without assessment students’ as well as teachers will not know what they have done in the process of teaching and learning. Without assessments students will not know how much they know and where they are. Without assessments teachers will not know how much they have to help their students to improve their knowledge and skills. So it is important to know about assessments. So, in this assignment it is clearly brief about the major two types of assessment that we are using here in Maldives. That is Formative assessment and summative assessment.
In this assignment there are two parts. In first part I have written literature review on assessment and its importance and also definition, purpose, examples and advantage and disadvantages

Students will improve their learning, as well as teachers will improve their teaching through formative assessment. Because it is happening while students learning. Teachers can identify students problem in formative assessment and that problem can diagnose students and have adjustment in the lessons and instructions given.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
“Summative assessments are used to measure what students have learnt at the end of a unit, to promote students, to ensure they have met required standards on the way to earning certification for school completion or to enter certain occupations, or as a method for selecting students for entry into further education” (CERI, n.d). In other words, summative assessment is assessment of learning.
In Summative assessment point or grade will be given at the end semester to assess what have been learned throughout the semester. Grades and marks are the result of summative assessment. Students will not get chance
PURPOSE OF FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE
I believe assessment is important and is the basis of planning for instruction, whether it is diagnostic prior to learning, formative during units or lessons, or summative to evaluate student learning. Rowan’s quote in Every Teacher’s Guide to Assessment, "After all, in the end, the problem is less the idea of testing itself, but how we design them, apply, them, and make use of their data." definitely has an impact on my assessment practices. I feel it is necessary to make sure the student acquires all aspects of the learning. Assessment should be used to bring a value for students. Within my instruction, I implement daily formative assessments which may include turn and share, quick writes, graphic organizers, online discussion responses, KahootIt, and other forms. Designing the appropriate formative assessment to match the lesson is important to assess how the learning is taught and whether the students are showing progress. In addition, I have worked on building blocks of formative assessments in checklist style leading up to the point of reviewing for a summative test. Each of these are checked off as completed and instant feedback is given. Feedback from an assessment is essential to student learning and how a teacher will ensure the content is being acquired.
“Summative assessment is what students tend to focus on. It is the assessment, usually on completion of a course or module, which says whether or not you have "passed". It is—or should be—undertaken with reference to all the objectives or outcomes of the
Assessment plays a significant role in the learning experience of students. It determines their progression through their programmes and enables them to demonstrate that they have achieved the intended learning outcomes. It is assessment that provides the main basis for public recognition of achievement, through the awarding of qualifications and/or credit.
Formative assessment, or assessment for learning as it is often called, is the assessment that
A formative assessment provides informal feedback and information during the teaching process. This assessment measures student progress and performance thus allowing further improvement and development. It can also assess the teacher’s progress as an instructor, enabling the teacher to evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching methods.
Assessment is carried out through formative (checks throughout the course), ipsative (to test against previous marks), and/ or summative (at end of course) activities to help the learner see their development whilst allowing the Assessor to give valuable feedback when appropriate. It’s purpose is to measure the learners understanding of the subject against the anticipated outcomes set by the criteria.
A summative assessment is given at pre-determined intervals. It could range from a state assessment to a benchmark test, or an end-of-unit test. It specifically is testing the knowledge that a student should have mastered by a particular point in time. A summative assessment is used for accountability.
Assessment is carried out to ensure that learning has taken place. This is used to measures the learner’s knowledge and skills in their chosen area of learning. Assessment can be used to encourage learners to ask questions on anything they have not understood, learners at some point will have to know that they will have to prove their knowledge and understanding to the standards of the awarding body.
As the awarding body will require the teacher to assess the student’s level of learning, the teacher will still need to decide what methods of assessment are required. This may be observation during any session, and completing assignments. It is important when any assessment has been made the teacher must give the student feedback. Finally the teacher needs to review any assessment and make any changes where necessary. It is important that the teacher maintains a record of student progress as this may be a requirement of the organisation.
The paper will be worth five points and is graded on completion, another five points will be assigned to class participation for the pre assessment. If students are actively and respectfully participating they will receive all five points.
1.1 Assessment measures the learner’s progress towards or the completion of, the learning aim and criteria, and can be used at any point during the learning cycle. It can provide information to adapt the delivery to suit the learner’s needs and abilities; a learner may need more help or time on some aspects, or has progressed quicker than planned and requires additional goals. By standardising the assessment process this creates uniformity for all learners.
Whether formative assessment is the best method to be used to assess students, can a particular method of assessing students have an impact in students’ learning, is teacher’s role in assessing students’ important for students learning and does students’ voice and formative assessment have any relation in enhancing students learning, are some questions that I want to get crystal clear answers for and look into with keen interest to find out whether students learning is enhanced through formative assessment. Hence in this essay I will be digging into, a descriptive, a critical and a reflective deep look through my own experiences, researches and theories in the related field on the questions or issues mentioned above to find out whether formative assessment in real enhances students’ learning. The main focus of this essay is the urge of finding out whether formative assessment in real enhance students learning. With the high hope of applying and practicing every little bit of information that I compile from the readings into the current practices in any correlated
No grading in formative assessment so it carries away the anxiety from students. Teachers can check if students can understand the instructions so she can step forward but if they are not she can take step back for the benefit of students learning. Teachers can give instructions in order to make task or activity easy for students so the students can understand them well enough. Formative assessment can serve as a practice for students. In formative assessments the data can be used to help students to better understand curriculum. Very easy to implement. Teachers can evaluate them selves with formative assessment.[2]
Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development (Palomba & Banta, 1999). Educational assessments are carried out to measure the efficiency of the program, the quality of instruction and progress of a child’s learning. The purpose is to determine the growth and development.
