In the second section of the assessment I will describe four discriminatory practices in health and social care. The four discriminatory practices I will be describing are prejudice, labelling, stereotyping and abuse. Prejudice: This is an preconceived ideas about an individual, arising from a person’s negative ideas about the individual. Stretch Whitehouse, 2010, pg 68. Prejudice can be positive or negative. It depends on how the service provider views the individual in any health and social care setting. In this case the individual stereotyped all elderly people in the care home to behave like babies. However, not all elderly people behave or act like babies. This is just the idea the individual has on elderly people. Labelling: This is giving people labels or names. Which might be mostly negative. People in health and social care setting tend to label people because of how they see such individual. For example in a center for young adults, there is a young boy and he behaves like someone who is in a gang. if a service provider sees the boy he might be labeled as a bad boy who is a bad influence to others. The service user has being labeled in this way. On the other hand the individual might not belong to any gang, but just like acting like that. Equality- being equal, especially in rights, status or opportunities. All individuals should be treated equally and there are laws in place to ensure that this happens. In accordance with the law, organisations have quality policies to ensure that everyone is treated equally.

1 Anti-Discriminatory Practice in Counselling identifies the ease with which individuals can be disadvantaged merely on the basis of their gender, race, culture, age, sexuality or ability.
Being a minority in the United States has and will possibly always been a struggle. With the economy being in shams and minimum wage becoming career, minorities have multiple issues that society is unaware especially in health care. A large percent of minorities are the majority of workers of America, in which requires the most of the health care distribution. But are they receiving the proper access to health care and prescription access based on their ethnicity/race? Discrimination and racism continue to be a part of the unbalancing inequality in society and have adversely affected minority populations, and the health care system in general. Analyzing some of the racial disparities in health care among Americans are modifications in both need and access. Minorities are most likely to need health care but are less likely to receive health care services, including proper drug access.
The data protection act- the data protection act is legislation put in place to keep personal data confidential. It can promote anti-discriminatory practice as it can stop people finding out information about individuals that the individual wants to stay private. E.g. phone numbers and addresses. These would need to stay private so people don’t find out where you live or what is wrong with you.

The labelling theory in relation to health and social care is very significant. Labels are used consistently within health and social care settings, whether this is through diagnosis, or a service user/providers background. If a service user was diagnosed with a mental health condition like schizophrenia, then this will provide them with a ‘label’. In some cases, labels can be an advantage as it helps aid recovery and treatment, even though it is stigmatising. Labels help service providers provide appropriate care. This can be a result of their own understanding of treatment or recovery paths that link in with this given ‘label’.
In this assignment I am going to design a booklet explaining of how national initiatives promote anti-discriminatory practice. I am going to explain an assessment of the influences of a recent national policy initiative promoting anti-discriminatory practice in health and social care settings. Then I am going to evaluate the success of a recent initiative in promoting anti-discriminatory practice.
Abuse can occur from a lack of training or feeling they are superior so they feel they can abuse them because they are vulnerable.

Discrimination can effect children in many different ways and sometimes you can find yourself judging someone without knowing anything about that certain person.

Labels, or stereotypes, have the potential to harm and negatively impact society even when the label does not correctly apply to the individuals they were placed on. Judging people without getting to know what kind of personality they have often leads to misjudgment. There are a lot of people who are under an untrue stereotype and it affects everyone. Stereotypes can be defined as an image given to people based on the type of person they are or something they belong to and is believed by a lot of people, and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotypes).
