Romeo and Juliet, the famous story of two star crossed lovers whose love and death couldn’t be prevented. Is fate really portrayed here? Or is someone in the play to blame? William Shakespeare is a widely known poet and writer who lived in the 16th century. However, few know that he was also an actor who performed in many of his own and other playwrights plays. During his lifetime he wrote thirty seven plays, one hundred fifty four sonnets, many poems, as well as lost plays. One of his most well-known plays is Romeo and Juliet. In this play there are many unfortunate events that lead to Romeo and Juliet’s death. Friar Lawrence is the most to blame for the tragic events. He married Romeo and Juliet, failed to inform Romeo of their plans, and gave Juliet a sleeping potion. Friar Lawrence was a man that Romeo …show more content…
“Meantime I writ to Romeo, That he should hither come as this dire night, To help to take her from her borrow'd grave, Being the time the potion's force should cease. But he which bore my letter, Friar John, was stay'd by accident, and yesternight return'd my letter back.” (Act 5, Scene 3) In this quote , the friar is saying that he wrote to Romeo but his letter was never sent. He had planned on Romeo receiving the letter and hadn’t thought of a backup plan. He had decided that after he went to get Juliet,he would write to Romeo again. Because he hadn’t been able to send the letter to Romeo, Romeo killed himself in the tomb with Juliet. These three reasons, along with others, prove that Friar Lawrence is to blame for the events that occur in Romeo and Juliet. He married young Romeo and Juliet together, which emotionally tied them to each other. He gave Juliet the escape idea and the sleeping potion. He also failed to inform Romeo of the rescue plan. He could’ve been a very desperate man in search of peace in Verona, but it led to the deaths of many; including those of the star-crossed
The final act of William Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is one of the most well-known resolutions in all of literature. A Shakespearean tragedy often involves a protagonist with a tragic flaw that ultimately leads to their death. Romeo and Juliet’s impetuous and passionate relationship leads to their deaths. However, the lovers are not the only ones responsible for their tragic ends. Friar Lawrence is also guilty for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, as he the married the couple in secret and devised a faulty plan to reunite the lovers.
Friar Lawrence was responsible because he agree to marry Romeo and Juliet, without thinking in all the consequences this could bring. “I’ll help you with your secret wedding. This marriage may be lucky enough to turn the hatred between you famillies into pure love,” (Act 2, Scene 3, pg. 103). Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet not because what they feel but, because he thinks it would be a good excuse to end the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. This impact Romeo and Juliet because they now have to do everything
In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, I believe Friar Lawrence is responsible for the dramatic death of Romeo and Juliet. I think he causes their death because of three main reasons. One, he married Romeo and Juliet. He thought he was in love with Rosaline and when Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him with Juliet; he knows it was a bad idea, but he still agreed to marry them. Two, he gives Juliet the sleeping potion, without having a proper plan to execute. He executed the plan without knowing if the letter, with the plan, got to Romeo. This is why Romeo assumes that Juliet is dead. When he Romeo sees her like that, he soon kills himself and buys a potion to help him do that. Last, he left Juliet in the tomb alone with the
To begin with, Friar Lawrence is responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death. For example, Friar Lawrence took it upon himself to marry Romeo and Juliet, thinking it would end up bringing the families together when it ended up doing the opposite. This is proven when Friar Lawrence says, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be,/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households' rancor to pure love” (2. 3. 90-92). Friar figured if Juliet and Romeo were married, the families would be forced to get along. Additionally, Friar Lawrence is the one who came up with the plan to give the sleeping potion to Juliet when he knew it would be risky business. Also, when Juliet woke up from her sleep and found Romeo dead, Friar should have assumed that she was in a fragile state. Friar left Juliet because he didn’t want to get caught. This is where Juliet decided to stab herself with the dagger and take her life. If Friar would have waited in the tomb with her, he could have
What is blame? Blame is an assigned responsibility for a fault or a wrong. Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend explain to the readers, "We live in a culture of blame. People will blame anyone or anything for their misery sooner than take the responsibility to own it and make it better,” (Cloud and Townsend, 1). The quote above elucidates that people resort to blame because psychologically they do not want to take responsibility for the fault that they have committed. Blaming is a factor in Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet, for the reason that blaming is a major cause of Romeo and Juliet’s death. Friar Lawrence and Capulet are two of the main factors to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet.
The Faults of Romeo and Juliet’s death Friar Lawrence is one character at fault for their deaths because he continued to make plans for Romeo and Juliet to be together. In the story when Juliet is being forced to marry Paris, Friar Lawrence devises a plan. To show, “Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, And hither shall he come, and he and I Will watch thy waking, and that very night Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua.
Juliet wakes up finding Romeo dead, then she starts talking about how bad Romeo’s death was. She was spiraling in the emotional roller coaster going down to suicide. While this is happening, the Friar walks in and hears the authorities coming. He says “Come, I'll dispose of thee Among a sisterhood of holy nuns: Stay not to question, for the watch is coming; Come, go, good Juliet,”. Juliet would not go, because she was wanting now to die with her love. Since she was not coming, Friar Lawrence says “I dare no longer stay.” Really quick after the Friar leaves, she commits suicide. Friar Lawrence left the scene, because he did not want to get in trouble with killing Romeo. He wanted to run from the crime, and hide the witness in crime, Juliet, by bringing her to the nuns. SInce Juliet was not coming in time, he runs with the intention of getting away with his crime of killing Romeo. As the Friar runs away, his crime only becomes bigger when Juliet kills herself. The Friar is guilty now with not two, but now three

Fate is a powerful thing, people see have fate in many movies such as Final Destination, where death is unstoppable. Every decision and action made by the characters can be fated by the universe. When Friar Lawrence’s plan of getting the two lovers back in each others arms was not followed through with, Romeo was unaware of the plan. He believed Juliet's “death” was a real tragedy, taking his life by drinking a strong potion prepared by an apothecary. If the plan was seen through all the way, or even succeeded, then Friar Lawrence could have had a different impact on the tragedy. When the friar misjudges the situation and does not stress the importance of getting information to Romeo, he becomes who is to blame for the death of the star crossed lovers. A chain of reactions happens as Juliet sees her dear Romeo dead beside her and takes her own life as well.
Friar Laurence was a father figure to both Romeo and Juliet. They would go to him for advice, and he gave them the advice that would eventually cost them their lives. First and foremost, the Friar made the plan to fake Juliet’s death. Juliet receives the news from her father that she is to be married to the County Paris, which
She will beshrew me much that Romeo Hath had no notice of these accidents. But I will write again to Mantua, and keep her at my cell till Romeo come. Poor living corse, closed in a dead man’s tomb!” Now that Friar John messed up and did not tell Romeo Friar Lawrence has to try to save them by going to the tomb.
Various people have different beliefs on the subject of fate. No matter what they are, fate is something that goes back almost to the beginning of time. When you are born your fate has already been chosen for you, from the person you will marry, to the person and/or thing that caused your death. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, An Aggrieved family feud, uncontrollable emotions, the role of fate and tragedy, play a big role in the sadly, short lives of the two teenage lovers. Although Shakespeare gave many possibilities to a various number of characters in this play to be responsible for this tragedy, one whom has read the play never actually got to put a name and face to such a disgraceful responsibility.
