The essay opens up with McKibben talking about how the political campaign against global warming is flawed because at our current point there is nothing much that can be done to fix it.(Mckibben,1) He then goes to state that humans are the biggest culprit behind global warming and supports this by giving examples such as SUVs and American ignorance.(2,9) He concludes by saying that if ten percent of America were to go green, it still would not save the planet, but ten percent could get the government’s attention to pass laws making everyone go green. (11) To start my response, I am of a personal belief that global warming is a hoax. Over the course of my education, many of the arguments for global warming have been disproven to me. Rising water temperatures actually have beneficial effects on coral. It is like leaving a plant in the sun. I watched a documentary where the famous marine biologist, Jean-Michel Cousteau, talks about the Great Barrier Reef and how temperature affects it. Normally it sits comfortably between 85 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures lower than 70 can cause the coral to turn white and die. However, after the existing coral dies, new coral grows on top of it and the cycle starts again. Aside from this this, coral has been known to adapt to survive in waters where the temperature can get below 60 or rise above 90. So the coral population is in no real danger. Another point he makes is that Polar bears are getting scrawnier because the seal habitat has declined because global warming causes the ice to melt. This is false. A common fact global warming supporters forget to mention is that arctic and Antarctic snowfall replenish the ice each year. Polar bears and seals are more in danger of poaching than losing their habitat to global warming. Both species are on the endangered list. However, weighing anywhere between 775 to 1,200 pounds. Polar bears are still the largest species of bear living on the planet. So, in short, I have spent an hour and a half of my time to respond to a person who doesn’t know what he is talking about, doesn’t cite his research, and is arguing for a theory that I myself haven’t found to be credible or factual. I’m glad I could
Whenever someone thinks of CO2, they think of global warming. They are reminded of Al Gore and his stance on global warming and they automatically think it is true. He has a lot of evidence to back up his theory about how global warming exists and that it is the reason animals are going extinct and also why the climate is changing. Well these facts are wrong and there is evidence to prove it. Global warming is not real and the Earth might even be in a cooling period. There so many reasons to blame people for the epidemic of this false global warming. CO2, a naturally produced gas absorbed by oceans and trees could not be the reason, so what could? Well, nothing can, none of man’s efforts to control the climate will
Mckibben inaugurates his third paragraph suggesting that we make the environmental issues, “"the great moral crisis of our time, and the equivalent of the civil rights movement of the 1960s."(747). He uses this analogy to explain that in his opinion, we are strip-mining the present and destroying all of whom come after it. Thus, leading him to discuss exactly how humans’ materialistic ways have impacted the earth. From Bangladesh living three months in thigh high-deep water, to polar bears becoming “20% scrawnier than they were a decade ago” (748). The environmentalist writer goes on to discuss how to deal with global warming since it is indeed creeping up on us.
Global climate change is one of the greatest threats to the long run future of coral reefs. In combination with other natural and human-induced pressures, warming seas pose a serious risk to the world's coral reef ecosystems. Summer sea temperature increases of just 2-3°C for a week or two, or 1-2°C for a month or two, are enough to kill sensitive corals.
“All across the world, in every kind of environment and region known to man, increasingly dangerous weather patterns and devastating storms are abruptly putting an end to the long-running debate over whether or not climate change is real. Not only is it real, it's here, and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster.” BARACK OBAMA, speech, Apr. 3, 2006. Climate change is not a theory contrary to what many individuals believe and is in fact confirmed by major scientific agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States. Global Warming causes are mainly due to greenhouse gases
Since climate change unfolds over long periods of time, we tend to overlook the dangerous outcomes; we focus and react to immediate, urgent events instead like our kids or bills. Although scientists have agreed that climate change has significantly altered the atmosphere, we still don’t have a majority of the population taking action. We need to restraint ourselves from using fossil-fuels and fracking before we reach an irreversible tipping point and to protect our way of life, our children, and future generations (Keya Chatterjee, Disruption video). Global warming is determining every aspect of our lives, and if we don’t acknowledge this environmental issue and take action, we will not live, we will die. Alternatively, a post-carbon environment is definitely within our grasp, with 100% renewable energy sources. A change to friendly energy doesn’t mean economic instability; we’ll still have job opportunities installing solar panels and wind turbines, for example. Although we need political will from world leaders, in order to establish this transition, we as individuals must take action and get
Supporters of the Global Warming Hoax claim that climate change is not due to human activities, instead it is produced with biased data for the purpose of financial or political gain. In this paper, nine sources, including reports from organizations, a speech from a senator, news articles and blog posts, are presented to discuss . These sources come from three perspectives: 1. Those who support the idea of global warming as a hoax; 2. Those who support the idea of global warming as a reality; 3. Academics who provide data and research relating to the issue.
NGS integrates greenhouse into other major policy initiatives, such as the Natural Heritage Trust, and launches new measures to increase greenhouse emission reduction activities across the Australian community. It provides the strategic framework for an effective greenhouse response and for meeting current and future international commitments. It will provide a fresh impetus for action by governments, stakeholder groups and the broader community and set directions for that action into the next century.
Global warming is just a chunk of a much larger problem, the climate is shifting faster than it usaully does, and research and observation point to humans for overexploiting the earth and acting as a tumor, speeding up its aging cycle, killing off species faster than they can mutate to adapt, and discovering astronomical levels of pollution and waste. Because of this, we cannot continue beliving it is a hoax, with clear evidence of rapid decline, it would be incorrect to say it is incorrect simply because our surroundings do not reflect the entire condition of the Earth and its complex
Because the atmosphere is warming, the air and water temperatures are too. This causes the arctic ice to melt, and this is a problem because the ice is the polar bears habitat (U.S. Department of the Interior). Polar bears use the ice to hunt seals and other sources of food, and now that there is less ice, their food source is slowly diminishing. Because of this, many polar bears are slowly starving. Another impact of the arctic ice melting is that the polar bears are not able to move around as swiftly. They used to be able to move around land masses because ice connected them, but now they are not able to move as much. Because of this, the polar bear is an endangered species and has taken on the role of the global warming
Over 35 years ago, climatologist Wally Broecker coined the term global warming in a paper outlining the trends that he was noticing with temperature and C02 levels (Stefan). Ever since then, the debate has heated up on the controversy of global warming. Politicians have even used the issue to boost their campaigns. Some question whether the earth’s temperature is rising at an unusual rate. Scientists perform experiments from glacial ice to observe the correlation between carbon dioxide levels and temperature. Scientists have changed the debate over the years from debating whether global warming was actually happening to the current debate about what is causing global warming. Therefore, the term global warming in this paper refers to
Coral cannot survive when the temperature of the water gets too high. Global Warming has affected many areas of the world, but it has especially taken a toll on the ecosystems of coral reefs. The increase in temperatures has caused an increase in coral bleaching. During a bleaching the algae in the coral is released and the coral turns white. Coral can survive through a bleaching period, but they are more vulnerable. In many cases the coral is not able to survive though. Bleaching can also be caused by runoff and pollution, which we all can help
If a group of four polar bears drowned ONE TIME, then it in not necessairly the fault of global warming. Ever since 1980, there is a growing population of polar bears. Of 13 main groups in canada, 2 are declining, and the other 11 are thriving (Kelly, 2009). In fact, polar bears are becoming a problem to the natives because of the GROWING polar bear population (Watts, 2013). There are actually thousands of feet of rock that has fossils, and these fossils, back when they were animals, thrived in the co2 rich atmosphere, which had TEN TIMES the amount of co2 that we have today (Miscellaneous myths). Now, how is that bad? As for the people that rant on and on about how the co2 we put in the atmosphere causes huge weather problems, you’re next.
Many claim that global warming is obvious and that all arguments against global warming fall. The problem is that what is “obvious” often isn’t true. “A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.” This is the Webster dictionary definition of Global Warming, which basically says that due to an overflow of harmful and hazardous chemicals in the air that it is creating a danger zone for the earth. This is because these chemicals are increasing the earths’ temperature. Svante Arrhenius, a Swedish scientist was the first person to claim that in 1896 that fossil fuel combustion may
Global warming has been an on-going issue for many decades. Most people would argue that it is a hoax; while others argue it is true. Climate change can cause a domino effect of catastrophes throughout the world. Once it affects one group, then that affected group will affect another, and so on and so forth; like a plague. Global warming is an authentic problem and we need to find more efficient ways to eliminate it, or at least contain it.
