I have undertaken a range of medically related work experience including spending two weeks volunteering at a pharmacy where I had the opportunity to see how services such as blood pressure and blood sugar testing worked and I was given the chance to serve customers and to give patients their prescription. During my placement, I observed how excellent communication between the pharmacist and the patient was important to enable a better understanding of the instructions on how to use the prescripted medication. This experience highlighted the importance of excellent communication between the medical professional and patient. I volunteered to be a form prefect and this enabled me to improve upon my communication and interpersonal skills. The role also allowed …show more content…
I had the opportunity of improving upon my ability to communicate effectively with people of different ages. This has enhanced my interpersonal communication, team work skills and leadership abilities which are valuable skills needed for any medical career. To further support this, I had the opportunity of being a science mentor and this role allowed me to support students to excel in their science study and this was demonstrated by having the responsibility of helping pupils at GCSE level. These opportunities with children have been a very rewarding experience and have enhanced my desire to care for others as a Nurse. Having done work experience at a care home, I was able to work and interact closely with elderly residents, which was very rewarding. This enabled me to actively care for people and to gain more confidence and this was achieved through speaking with the residents, participating in various actives and making them tea. This experience also made me aware of their healthcare needs and challenges related to their care such as giving the right dosage for their
Although elderly care givers jobs are in high demands not a lot of people are able to do it because it requires a great deal of strength patient and commitment each day. The experience taught me to work hard to achieve my goal of becoming a doctor and helping as many people as I can. It taught me not to waste my time. operate as a service provider. From this I will be able to gain a greater understanding of patient care. This collaboration between disciplines and the resulting improvement for the patient was identified by Hill (2006). Since I have started working within the NHS over the last year, I have had more opportunities to work with members of different professions both in the NHS and voluntary sector. Arranging work experience at a GP, has proven to be invaluable, as I was able to see interactions between various roles including Doctors, nurses and the receptionists, with patients coming from contrasting backgrounds. This has impressed on me the importance of empathy and how to communicate sensitive issues in an appropriate manner.
I first became interested in healthcare when my granddad was in hospital, and from then gathered that I enjoyed caring for people. I have a passion in the prenatal development. Looking at different jobs in the care industry I decided to look into midwifery, for example I read a midwifery extract in the 'nursing times', as I wanted to help bring new life into the world. I worked alongside health care professionals for four months in a residential care home, which gave me a better understanding of the care environment, and it also taught me the structure of the job.
I volunteered in various health sectors: nurseries, Sunday schools and GP surgery. During my summer holidays, I helped out in my local GP surgery. Under the guidance of a Nurse practitioner, where I observed communications between a patients and a nurse practitioner, based on minor illness and often engaged into the conversation. Additionally, I also had a day where I learnt phlebotomy, where blood sample’s are taking from the vain using vacutainer or finger pricked with a sharp and blood specimen is taking for a minute checking for blood glucose or HIV. This enable me to gain few clinical skills and enables to communicate between patient and family members, which only nourished my hunger and desire to partake in a role that strives to improve healthcare in my local community. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to work at my local pharmacy. This developing experience affected me to comprehend the importance of different pharmaceutical drugs and how they work to maintain of our complex
In order to improve my understanding of what it means to be a doctor, I organised a placement in a GP, where I saw the compassion and empathy that a doctor has for his patients. My interaction with practice team on daily basis and witnessing the doctor’s work reinforced the importance of good communication and teamwork skills. I have attended a placement at hospital where I discovered the difference between a GP and hospital doctor. I witnessed an endoscopy session with ENT and learnt the importance of manual dexterity. My work experience at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and attending theatre sessions provided me with understanding of the process of an operation and how vital important team work is. Going on the
My interest in teaching, problem solving, and willingness to accept unpopular tasks lead to new opportunities. These opportunities were in committee leadership and clinical projects. One of my accomplishments that I am proud of is an award I achieved for "outstanding performance in Beauty Therapy 2012" I hope this shows you that I am an individual that puts 100% into everything I do. Throughout the course of a year, I had a first hand experience of patients and the inner workings of a hospital. As a courier, each day was composed of handling medication, blood, food, and interacting with patients. A visit to the hospital is not a patients first choice by any means, and this was expressed through multiple emotions such as gratitude towards the staff, irritation due to their situation, or the occasional felon who would express their feelings through the use of expressive language. Their interactions provided an alternate perspective, as the staff would handle each situation with a smile on their faces no matter the circumstance. I truly came to understand the importance of communication between a physician, their staff, and
I was able to explore more about Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the legal aspects of nursing and the healthcare delivery system. Especially due to the current political climate, I became a more active member of my community by writing to my Congressmen and Senators about my
I've participated in various work experiences enabling me to gain skills that prepare me for the field of nursing. My involvement with Shadowing hospital nurses has allowed me to develop professionalism skills through observing practitioners in their role further educating me on what it takes to be a nurse. With care home Volunteering i was particularly able to strengthen my communication and teamwork skills, although Nursing being an incredibly rewarding profession it requires professionals to work together and through the care home I was given the opportunity to work with various professionals using effective communication when sharing information and when learning how to interact with different service users to help build a good working relationship. After working part-time as a file clerk in high school for one of the largest investment companies, albeit this was not making a difference in peoples’ lives. My days were filled with going to school for half a day and then to work the other half. Like many seniors
Communication skills training could improve ‘patient centred behaviour’ in clinical encounters which includes active listening, open questioning, providing patients with opportunities to ask questions, actively involving patients in management decisions, showing empathy, initiating psychosocial discussion, ethical and professional behaviour, and should be a core element in medical education. Inadequate focus on the softer skills like communication during the training scheme and during the assessments, may lead to the trainee being inadequately equipped to deal with difficult clinical situations once they become consultants and having to learn it the hard way without any support. Ineffective communication in clinical interactions could
This job requires many skills to be able to perform this job successfully. You need to have great communication skills so you can talk to your patients about their medication carefully so they understand. You need to have understanding skills so you can connect with the patient and help them with what they are worried about. You must be patient so you can take the time to explain to the patient and there will always be short tempered people, and light minded people. As for me, I cover communication and understanding skills. I need to go out and gain experience to develop
