“I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation (Martin Luther King).” “GETTYSBURG ADDRESS” (19 NOVEMBER 1863) [1] Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal ( Abraham Lincoln).” “We meet at a time of tension between the United States and Muslims around the world – tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate (Barack Obama).” All of these are the starting point of great changes. These famous historical figures are considered “Outsiders” The Term “Outsider” Literally means “One who does not belong to a particular group.” Perception is the main key in deciding if someone belongs when they are an outsider. If you look at it from one group they don’t belong and from another they do. One of the most famous outsiders in history is Martin Luther King. He was considered this because he decided to take a stance against what's normal and average. He wanted to have equal rights for both African Americans and Caucasians. By doing this he was considered an outsider by all people. They either stood with him or against him during his outside revolution. Although he did not like to be considered an outsider as shown by this quote “Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. Anyone who lives in the US can never be considered an outsider anywhere in the country” He was an outsider by trying to make no one feel like an outsider themselves. So throughput this he didn't belong to the groups trying not to allow equal rights. But to the people, he stood up with he was a leader and belonged to their group, therefore even if you don't feel like you belong with the group you're in, you have a network. The next outsider is Our famous 16th president Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was considered “the rail-splitting” candidates throughout his campaign and presidency. He was born and raised from working-class roots. This set him apart from his opposing candidate William H. Seward (who was the former governor of New York and a sitting Senator. Seward came from a high-class family, born and
One example of an outsider would be Gregor in the famous story “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. In this story, there are numerous examples of Gregor being misjudged and Gregor feeling misunderstood. The first example is how people view Gregor as a traveling salesman. “People don't like traveling salesmen. I know that. People think they earn pots of money and thus lead a fine life. People don't even have any special reason to think through this judgment more clearly” (Kafka, 148). In this quote, you can clearly see that people are misjudging Gregor because he is a traveling salesman. In the text, Gregor feels that he is misunderstood because none of these people know that Gregor has to work as a traveling salesman not because he wants to, but because he has to pay off his family's debt. Another example is how Gregor’s family assumes things about what he would or would not do. “But how can it be Gregor? If it
Another person, that can be referred as an outsider is Johnny. “We beat the Socs.We stomped them-chased them outa our territory. Johnny didn’t even
It’s difficult to be a hero when you do some bad things to get there. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there are two completely different sides of town in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Socs are the rich kids who drive expensive cars and wear expensive clothes and the Greasers are seen as a good-for-nothing person. They don’t have money and they don’t get whatever they want, they also have to work additionally hard to get to where they want to be in life. If you are considered a Greaser you are like a muffin and the Socs are the colorful cupcakes. Everybody would prefer a cupcake over a muffin. In this novel two boys were trying to protect themselves and they run into a problem while doing it so, they hit the road. I am going to tell you my opinion on whether or not Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade are heroes.
Have you ever seen someone that looks weird walking around? Well these people could be outsiders. You might think bad of them but they could be useful in society. For example eminem was a outsider, the people that took down the confederate monuments were, and they have unbiased opinions.
What does it mean to be an “outsider?” There may be many different definitions on the Internet, or in the dictionary, but my definition of what it means to be an “outsider,” is to be excluded. It may be simple, but it is true, and it is very meaningful to those who have been outsiders at one point in their lives. I know because I was one of these people. I am not an outsider in my every day to day life in school and other aspects of life, but there have been certain places and times when I have felt like I don’t belong and one of these times was last year, when my family went to Tucson, Arizona, and Nogales, Mexico, for spring break.
When people hear the word “outsider” it typically doesn’t reflect positivity and joy. Usually it is used to point out how different the other party is from the social norm or standard already set. There are numerous ways a person can be pegged as an outsider, either by the way they dress, their thoughts and their actions. These thoughts and actions can have negative outcomes in terms of social acceptance because of how strange these people seem or act compared to the ordinary. With this in mind Kafka’s work The Metamorphosis can be introduced. In this short story, Gregor Samsa, the main character, has undergone a change that makes him into an outcast. This metamorphosis is not by choice, but nonetheless it leads to negative reactions from those around him. Equally, the related video dealing not only with Kafka's work, but also with the idea of changing as a human being can also used to tie in the idea of being different from the crowd. In addition, my own experiences of feeling isolated and different show how being an outcast is not a foreign idea. Due to this it can be said that outsiders are simply people who are misjudged or misunderstood and to emphasize this The Metamorphosis can be used as the first source of support.
Would you rather follow people that you don’t fully believe in, and mask what you really feel, or stand out from the crowd and be an individual even without others by your side? How about you lead that crowd. When you follow the Crowd, sometimes it isn’t something you completely, 100% believe in. So why would you want to pretend to be something you aren’t? Do you really need praise from others to feel like you are an important individual.
In conclusion I think everyone is a outsiders or think that they are outsiders but true outsides are the people that doesn't hang around the socs or the greasers. In my opinion I think that the socs and the greasers aren't because they fit in and they are in groups. In the beginning I said that I thought the true outsiders were Ponyboy, Cherry, the other people , and Johnny because they really never fit in anywhere they always thought different then the socs and the greasers and they liked different things than the socs and the greasers .So have you have felt liked a outsiders and who do think is the real outsiders ?
S.E Hilton’s inspirational book, Outsiders, is about a boy named Ponyboy and his best friends as they go on an adventure that will change them forever. I compared Ponyboy to myself and noticed many similarities and differences between the two of us. We are similar when it comes to social character, sports, grades, and even courage. Even though we have some similarities, we also have our differences when it comes to time period, freedom, generosity, and organization. I enjoyed comparing and contrasting Ponyboy to myself because he taught me that even though life can be tough, if you look on the bright side of things, you can find happiness once again.
You see the person you love struggle to be the best person she can be to get recognition, well in her eyes. All you wanted to do is to help her at all times, but you can't. Unfortunately, you were just an outsider from the clan that happens to be marry off to the man you loved the most after much difficulty into approving the relationship. You don’t have the ability your husband or daughter have, so you sit there, stare and maybe shout some encouraging words until practice was over. Sadly, it happens every single day to much of your dislike.
The religions of division; some see those who belong to a specific religion as having somewhat of an us versus them mentality thus creating an insiders and outsiders situation as the byproduct of such an atmosphere; this is often the result of any community of people who chose to categorize the population into those who belong to the group from those who don’t. In every religion, that has a law attached to it, there are certain rules and regulations you are expected to follow if you are to fit in. Most religions are more strict then others, the word religion comes from the Latin word, “religare”, which means ‘to bind tightly’, so religion could most definitely defined as something that either can bind tightly around
An outsider is someone who does not belong to a particular group due to one outstanding characteristic: whether it is one’s skin tone, religious identity, socio-economic background, or anything distinguishable. The southern clergymen saw Martin Luther King as an outsider and called his protest, “untimely”. So in response to their defamations King explained his purpose of his ‘untimeliness’ which labeled him an ‘outsider'. First, Dr. King addresses his purpose of being in Birmingham specifically, next he explains why he is compelled to protest there, and finally he states his position in society that allows him to protest.
Some might consider outsiders strange or unusual, But outsiders can bring a much need change in society. Outsiders have never got the respect they deserve, they haven't been treat the same because of skin color or their personalities.
From what I have learned in this course, I believe humans have the need to express themselves through creating artifacts because it makes them feel alive and they can manifest an item that gives others an insight into the culture that surrounds them. Even though we may wake up every day, sometimes the need to feel alive is what we yearn for, we humans have a deep need to create because it ignites the flames that fuel the soul. We live aware of almost everything and that awareness gives us a desire to be here forever. Creating helps us feel like we will always be here. Creating allows us to express what it is to be human in an artifact, something that will be here long after we are gone.
First, there are several types of outsider based on different reasons. A person who decides to take himself away from the society, or one who different from most people can be said to be an outsider. a person not belonging to a particular group, set, party, etc. An outsider can also mean someone who is not within boundary or enclosure. “a person not belonging to a particular group, set, party, etc.” (OutsiderDictionary.com. Web. Pg.1). Though the dictionary has already described what an outsider meant, an outsider can also be when one is trying really hard to succeed at a particular thing but is having difficulty doing that; like in the case of a student who is having difficulty in passing a course while most of the students seem to be having no problem with the class. Such student can be said to be an outsider. While this is the case for students, a homeless is said to be an outsider too.
