Voluntary services are funded by non-profit making organisations that are usually charities such as Mencap, age concern and NSPCC. People who work in the voluntary sector usually do not get paid as they work to help the community. Voluntary services are non-profit businesses, the profit made is given to charities. These services are run by organizations and lotteries. They are run by organizations which are not for profit and non-governmental. The voluntary sector plays an important role in providing services in the community. Some of these organizations do charge for their services, but this isn’t for profit but to fund charities. Working in nonprofit is gratifying and at the same time challenging. As an administrator for a major nonprofit organization, I have witness first-hand the effects of staff retention and excessive turnover and its effects on the quality of service provided to clients and the increase in the cost of recruitment. However, recent data support how nonprofits continue to experience growth, while the private sector remains stagnant. Per the nonprofit quarterly the steady growth of nonprofit was estimated at 14.4 million people in 2013. In 2003, nonprofit organizations paid an estimated $425 billion in wages. Volunteers are not employees. Volunteers serve organizations by contributing time, energies or talents that help to fulfil the organizations' mission. They are not paid a wage for their contribution, however some employers may pay travel and lunch expenses.
The human service worker recognizes that productive team work is essential for an organization’s progress. A 2006 survey found that 91% of high-level managers view teams as essential to the organization’s goals, and a 2012 review found that teams provided 35% of the organization’s work (Harley-McClaskey, 2017). The leader takes actions to build the team, such as telling people about it to find potential members and to get assistance developing it. He or she searches for members who possess the necessary skills and offers training to those who have the potential to learn. Members must agree to pursue the goals, which advance the organization, over self-interests. A team has developed roles, strategies, and goals. In contrast, a work group is a potential team because members are still developing these components. Some work groups transform into teams over 6 - 9 months. A leader can assess a work group or team’s developmental stage and encourage growth (Harley-McClaskey, 2017).
An industry is defined by Johnson et al. (2014) as, “a group of firms producing products and services that are essentially the same.” The voluntary or not-for-profit industry applies to registered charities and non-registered charitable organisations which commits themselves to some form of activity which benefits society without the intention of making a profit for their endeavours. (Smith, Rochester, and Hedley, 1995)
They are central to the organizations success, upkeep of relationships with donors, individuals, and other organizations as well. The volunteer donates much of their personal time, knowledge, and understanding of the community – which are all deeply invaluable to the organization. It is in short, a big job for just the return of a nice pat on the back. Volunteers are not compensated in the same traditional way as an employee is, but they are still known to impact the organization with their monetary value of resources that they pull in for their contributions.
To combine volunteers and paid staff for service in social care and public services is common in recent years. Though the volunteering is a conception of the idea of goodness, how to organize volunteers to a universal system, till faced with many practical difficulties for non-profit organizations and governments (Brudney, 1993, 2000; Cunninghan and James, 2011). To look forward community-based volunteers’ organizations and even become social care providers, especial focus on elderly service is a hard task.

You have brought many important points to this week’s discussion, and I agree with majority of them; in particular your argument regarding communication. I render voluntary services in a non-profit organization for many years; I have witnessed how changes are implemented right away. Although that these changes have been analyzed by the leaders and most experienced individuals in the organization, volunteers often are not acquainted of these changes until leaders announce the changes. Despite changes usually lead to the organization improvement, ineffective communication channels leaves a bad taste among the workforce. Almost all changes in the workplace cause uncertainty since most employees may question their ability to adjust to them (self-efficacy).
Many elders are victims of abuse everyday. Unfortunately, the perpetrator that commits this harmful act is likely to be a family member. According to the article An Ethnical Dilemma in Elder Abuse, “between 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection”(Linzer 2004, p.166). People that older Americans rely on for care are abusing them. As a social worker we need to advocate for our elderly population who often suffer from mental illnesses or other disabilities. We need to be critical when conducting our assessment to ensure our client’s needs are being met. Hospital visits are often the only time a victim will have the opportunity to interact with other people. Because most elder adults do not self-report instance of elder abuse, the responsibility for identifying, reporting, and intervention heavy relies on social workers. There are companies that their mission is to enhance, promote, train and teach people to become successful and independent. There are non-profit franchises and programs to support and communicate opportunities in different industries to offer jobs to people with disabilities.
More than one hundred years ago, the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC) was founded in New York City at a time when a cancer diagnosis meant certain death. The goal of the organization was to raise public awareness about the disease. Eventually, the name of the organization was changed to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the mission evolved from solely awareness to also include research, programs, and fundraisers. The modern ACS is a “nationwide, community-based health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem,” according to its website.
The life span period that begins in the early twenties and last through the thirties is known as Early Adulthood. During these time frame individuals establish personal and economic independence. They begin to advancing in career, select a mate, start a family, and rear children (Hollingsworth, 2016). However, there are a lot of other factors that affect some of the norms in this life span development. Therefore, we are going to review a case study of a volunteer, during the duration of this paper I will use “JB” to represent the individual. JB is a twenty-nine-year-old Native American male. He originates from a small town in DeKalb county. However, he is currently enlisted in the United States Army. During the time of the interview he was stationed in North Carolina waiting on his deployment to Germany. In regards to his immediate family, JB is the middle child of three children. He has a younger brother and an older sister. Currently JB is going through the divorce process with his wife.
Burton Weisbrod, an extensively published economist, examines the future of the ever-growing nonprofit sector and its increasing interrelationship with the private and governmental sectors; a consequence of the nonprofits need for revenues to provide services to the community.
