One of the largest and most problematic health issues in our society is smoking. Smoking is currently the leading cause of death in our country, due to its harmful and addicting contents, such as nicotine and tobacco. Although millions die from it each year, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death as well. Without smoking, a tremendous amount of money and lives will be saved. I think that our country should ban smoking and the production of cigarettes in order to maintain a healthier nation, help save the environment, and prevent the almost 1000 deaths that they cause in fires each year.

Smoking cigarettes causes more deaths than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm- related incidents combined. Some people say that banning cigarettes would be bad because the government makes a lot of money from the tax revenues. Or that it would increase illegal trade. But based off of the fact that millions of people die each year, cigarettes should be banned because it causes many health issues, it affects a lot of people, and it costs the government a lot of money.

If somebody is smoking they can get many different types of diseases and cancers. It is proven that somebody who smokes is 15 to 30 percent more likely to get lung cancer. That is a crazy amount more than a person not smoking. Tobacco itself also has around 7,000 chemicals. That many chemicals are not very good for your body. Around 70 are known to cause cancer in humans and animals (CDC). Ammonia(used to treat waste water), Arsenic(rat poison), Acetone(nail polish remover), Cadmium(batteries), Nickel (Smoker News World) are only a few of the dangerous chemicals in tobacco. If that does not scare you away from smoking I don't know what will. All of those chemicals listed are extremely poisonous. In our culture it is unethical to have somebody kill themselves. But this is still happening right under our noses, literally. Thousands of people die because of smoking. So why don't why just ban smoking and stop these people from killing

The federal government should pass a nationwide smoking ban from all indoor facilities. There are many controversial statements out there, but indoor smoking should not be one of them. Professor Sir Robin Murray, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College, said: “Excess dopamine is the best biological explanation we have for psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia. Should smoking bans be a law in every public place worldwide? Would you like to go out to eat with a friend and have the person right at another table smoke near you? I think not, I wouldn’t like it at all. They’re not only harming themselves, but everyone nearby. How much knowledge does this person have on the smoke they are inhaling? Everyone is at risk, adults, children, and even pets. Second-hand smoke can be prevented. Why allow this to happen in our world, if you want to smoke do it on your own time away from others who do not wish to inhale your smoke.

The after effects of smoking cigarettes is worse than smoking marijuana over a long period of time because of health effects, psychological effects, and social effects.
