A history of popcorn
When it comes to popcorn, more often than not it’s the sound that hits you first with its “pop, pop, popping”. It starts off nice and slowly before heading full steam ahead into a firestorm of kernels as they almost magically transform into clouds of crunchy white goodness. The next thing you’ll no doubt notice is the incredible smell that wafts through the room and eventually the entire house, slowly pulling you in as it teases your nose. You’ll feel weak as the popcorn tantalises your taste buds. By the time your teeth crunch down on the first bite, you’re totally and utterly hooked. Popcorn happens to be one of the most popular snacks and described by some as a completely irresistible treat. As they say, the proof is

His recipe included the use of a grill, a half-pint glass of popcorn and a frying pan that had been rubbed with lard or butter. He advised holding the pan over the fire whilst constantly stirring or shaking the corn and within a few minutes, the popcorn should have turned inside out to reveal the delicious white, fluffy centre. He also mentioned the addition of salt or sugar whilst it was still hot for added flavour. The issue with this particular method however seemed to be with the lard or butter. The butter would usually begin to burn before the pan reached a hot enough temperature and the lard would create popcorn that was covered in slime-like grease. It wasn’t until the latter portion of the 19th century that a more efficient way of popping popcorn was discovered. What were deemed to be “poppers” were actually boxes made of tight wire gauze and had long handles attached. They were designed to be held over an open flame. The design of poppers offered a number of benefits including the containment of popped kernels whilst also keeping any hands away from the heat source. Over the years, the popper became hugely popular and as a result a number of improvements were made to make it bigger and better than ever. Due to the improvements, popcorn became even more accessible to the masses of people wanting to get their hands on
Popcorn is over 4,000 years old and in the old days they would pop it in hot sand. Yuck!
Since sugar is composed of covalent bonds and therefore as we saw in part 2, takes much less time to melt, I think we didn’t observe bubbles because there was not as much as a reaction since it “melted” so much faster. Also, sugar does not change its composition when added to water, but salt does. Therefore, perhaps the sugar does not cause the screw to bubble much.
Though many people will think there is a lot of bad in soda, technically it’s just carbonated water, which is basically “gas that’s called carbon dioxide that has been dissolved under high pressure” (sciencebuddies.org). When one opens a can of soda pop the carbon dioxide in it is released out causing the bubbles in the drink, and the best part for this project is that one can choose their own way to do it, yes they may have to follow what the recipe calls for but they can choose their favorite flavors and their own color for it like if they wanted to they could make a bacon flavored pop but it might not taste the best but the point would be that it would be their own idea.
The history of corn can be dated back to the beginning of time, but the use and value of corn had been unnoticed until it was introduce by the Native Americans. Where corn had seemed to be a big part of their everyday life from, being in myths, legends, and for a huge portion of their diet corn was an essential component. "when the Europeans had touched base to the New World during the late fifteenth century, the Native Americans had introduced corn what they had called maize to the Europeans .This crop was then later on grown and adapted from Canada to southern South America very quickly, which then began to form the new basis of the New World civilization" (Leventin & McManhon, 2012). The way corn has been changing and revolutionizing throughout time has been both fascinating and drastic. Rather than conventional corn being grown, it is genetically modified corn that have been dominating today 's crop industry and farming but the question remains as to how the various types of GMO corn has influenced the way it is grown and used and what its ramification are.
The brand of popcorn testing has proven to be inconsistent. Each major brand of popcorn claims to have the highest amount of popped kernels. We chose this method of experiment because we can control the variables of the experiment. By controlling the temperature we can determine which method will yield the most amount of popcorn instead of relying on which brand claims to have the most yield of popcorn or studies on brands. This experiment can be used on all brands as long as the brand name stays the same.
Growing up in Nebraska I can tell you that I have ingested my fair amount of corn and corn-based products, I mean we are the Cornhuskers after all. But what is so special about corn? I ask this question because I want to know what is so special about corn and why is it in almost anything and everything we eat. America's agriculture is vast in the many types of plants that are planted and harvested every year, such as soybeans and wheat that are also used as an ingredient in many of our foods that we consume every day. When trying to answer this question I had to do some of my own investigative work, just as Pollan did when finding out all he could find out about corn. I researched the most grown grains in America, since corn is a grain, and to no surprise, it was corn but the second majorly grown crop that we Americans plant was soybeans. From there I
I counted, recorded and discarded any un-popped kernels and discarded any pieces that appeared to be broken off a popped kernel. A plastic spoon was used to carefully sort through the popcorn to minimize breakage.
First, Michael Pollan explains how corn is been used really “sprouted up” in the year 1947 after
In 1847, with Oliver Chase’s invention of the lozenge cutter, the famous Necco Wafers were born. Necco Wafers quickly became an American favorite with eight flavors to enjoy: orange, lemon, lime, clove, chocolate, cinnamon, licorice, and wintergreen. Aside from consumption, Necco Wafers have also been used as poker chips, for first communion practice, and even as bulls-eyes at target ranges. Four billion Necco Wafers are produced each year, and if placed edge-to-edge, would wrap around the world twice.
