‘Some texts leave readers with a largely idealistic impression of a theme or issue, while others leave readers with a more realistic or believable impression of the same theme or issue’ The theme of relationships, and particularly how gender roles influence said relationships is constantly evident in both of the texts that I have studied. In the play “Big Maggie” by John B. Keane and the movie “Juno”, directed by Jason Reitman, the central relationships are constantly influenced by gender roles. In both of these cases, somewhat surprisingly considering the contrast in family dynamics, I would say both texts produce a concrete, realistic impression of the theme of relationships, whether it be familial or romantic for the society they are set in. The film Juno was heavily idealistic rather than realistic in terms of gender roles, even for America in modern day, contrastingly “Big Maggie” remains, unfortunately, realistic in its …show more content…
Katie is presented as somewhat naïve for getting herself pregnant, shunned by society, and forced into a marriage in order to keep up family appearances. Although more extreme, it remains unfortunately realistic for the setting of the play. In “BM” we are witness to a domestic relationship under extreme duress. Maggie’s husband has just passed away, and even though it is evident from her nonchalant behaviour at his graveside that their relationship was not a loving one, she is still left for the first time in many years without a husband and willingly takes control of all their business affairs. The stresses that she and her family are under are clearly illustrated in the play, and the resolution which unfolds in the permanent fracturing of the family, with Maurice, Mick and Gert turning to England for employment and vowing never to see Maggie
When Juliet finds out that Tybalt has been killed and Romeo is in exile, for killing Tybalt, Juliet feels both passionate about Romeo and disappointed in both Romeo and herself, which reveal her inner struggle. In Act 3, Juliet’s Nurse comes back with this news that Tybalt is dead and that Romeo is such an awful person for killing him. Juliet fights back at the Nurse, and herself, for speaking bad about Romeo. She claims, ““Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband? Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy name, When I, thy three hours' wife, have mangled it? But wherefore, villain, didst thou kill my cousin? That villain cousin would have killed my husband.” (3.2.99-101). This shows that Juliet is passionate about Romeo, because first of all, she says that she was wrong to say bad things about her husband.
In this essay, I will be examining Shakespeare’s treatment of relationships in Romeo and Juliet. As a poet and playwright, he wrote 154 sonnets, 2 long narrative poems and 38 plays, one of his most famous plays being Romeo and Juliet. There are many different types of relationships between characters, and these are essential to the play. The prologue tells us that the play is about two star-crossed lovers from two feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets. There is hatred between these two families, this explains this, ‘Thou villain Capulet’. This quote suggests because of the hate between their families, the lovers are doomed from the start.
Parent-Child relationships are among one of the most complicated ones but also some of the most rewarding. The structure of the Parent-Child relationship has changed significantly over time. Parents do not treat their children the same way they did during the late 1500s. William Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo and Juliet illustrates how Parent-Child relationships were during this time and how complicated they could be. An excellent example of a complicated Parent-Child relationship in the play is Juliet’s relationship with her parents Lord and Lady Capulet. Their extremely troubled relationship is demonstrated in Act 3 Scene 5. In this paper, I will be addressing how Juliet’s complicated relationship with her parents leads to her tragic death. To do this I will analyze Juliet’s relationship with her parents by examining how Juliet’s parents treat her and how this results in a lack of communication between them. The paper will continue by looking at how this gives way to Juliet’s disobedience. It will conclude by assessing the consequences of the difficult relationship between Juliet and her parents and how it brings about her tragic death in the end. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet demonstrates the importance of a healthy Parent-Child relationship.
The relationship shown in Act 3 Scene 5 between Juliet and Lady Capulet is portrayed as poor. Lady Capulet is shown as a very distant mother, though this is to be expected when there is a Nurse taking care of the child from the early stages of the child’s life.
Love is a topic that has taken over today’s world. From music to movies, everything is now based on the love and relationships between people. However, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which is arguably the most famous love story in the world, could also be seen as a warning against love. The play Romeo and Juliet shows how platonic and romantic love can cause tragedy.
The father-child relationship between Lord Capulet and Juliet is a very strong one; during the beginning of the play Capulet is seen as a caring and protective father who wants what is best for his daughter. Shakespeare uses many techniques to present the relationship between Capulet and Juliet; the most common technique he uses is dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is utilized to develop tension within the audience; this tension builds up to the climax in Act 3 Scene 5 which is a turning point in their relationship.
Relationship is described as an emotional or other connection between people. The book Of Mice and Men and “Romeo and Juliet” both have similar relationships. These relationships are built around different circumstances and situations. George and Lennie only have each other which creates a better relationship. Romeo and Juliet had large families to support and love them. They grew up surrounded by strong families. When they met violence between the families forced them to choose family or each other. How does one have a strong enough bond after two days to turn away from a family whose has been supporting them throughout their lives? A solid relationship is not created in two days, but built through good and bad life experiences. Even though Romeo and Juliet have a relationship of love and forgiveness, George and Lennie still have the stronger
1. In this Scene, the nurse is shown to have a really close bond with Juliet. She seems to have a better relation than her mother. The nurse lost her daughter “Susan”(1.3 Line 20) as she was the same “age”(1.1 Line 21) as Juliet, which makes the nurse closer to Juliet and treats her as a daughter.
The emotion of love is an incredibly complex feeling, as displayed in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
In a nutshell she was just a young girl, then got married and died. The message I personally got from the play was to live life to the fullest because I personally wouldn’t want three relatively short acts to describe my life from start to
Romeo and Juliet, a tragic play written by William Shakespeare, manifests the idea that love supersedes hatred. The playwright evidently enforces the prominence of love though the relationship of Romeo and Juliet, despite their families’ feud. Additionally, Shakespeare uses Juliet’s nurse to demonstrate the prominence of love, despite the hatred of lower social class by the upper class. Moreover, the predominance of love over hatred is displayed through characters, Lord Capulet and Lord Montague, when they unite in sorrow. As a result, William Shakespeare evidently displays that love conquers hatred.
Love, the intense feeling of deep affection. Throughout the Shakespeare play of Romeo and Juliet this set of characters show their intense emotion and compassion they obtain for one another. The lovers of this play show their deep affection, not just internally, but as well as externally. If it is either the sacrificial ways or commitment they demonstrate, this love they have can be easily accounted for and seen well round.
This book is different than previous books i have read before so the themes in this book offer new territory i never expected to read in a classroom. The later 3 chapters we were suppose to read didn’t really provide a lot of details for my lens to be used to analyze for Gender/feminist views/ideas/roles but the chapters did provide interesting “relationships” between family members. I was sort of caught by surprised by how open and sudden these short segments of the story were while reading. I am going to be focusing on character interactions. I want to begin by looking at a quote from the first chapter. On page 23 Macon and ruth are in the Doctor’s house who earlier in the book killed himself by jumping off the hospital roof of where he
When teaching high school academic English classes, teachers use a wide variety of texts to educate their students. Juno is a screenplay written by Diablo Cody and Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare; in the grade 10 challenge English class of 2015-2016, students studied both texts. Juno is a better story for teaching a grade 10 English class than Romeo and Juliet. Juno uses language that is current and coherent, whereas, Romeo and Juliet uses more complex language making it harder to understand the plot. The plot of Romeo and Juliet is melodramatic and outlandish, however, Juno is more relatable. Juno shows how problems can be overcome and solved by opening a dialog with your parents, on the other hand Romeo and Juliet, presents
The familial relationship between Juliet and her father, Lord Capulet, is quite ambivalent. It is very much affected by prominent views of the public such as patriarchy. In the medieval world of Verona in Elizabethan England, fathers were entirely in charge the household as they were viewed as dominate and more powerful.
