Jess Ramsey English 3 16 May 2017 Captive Creatures-Yay or Nay? The issue on whether or not to keep animals in captivity has been debated heavily for a long time. With species such as the panda on the verge of extinction to mistreatment of marine mammals in theme parks such as Sea World, keeping wild animals under the care of humans has been a struggle and a highly controversial topic. Even though many people believe that animals should not be kept in captivity because humans are incapable of fully understanding and providing specific needs for wild animals, certain animals can be kept happy and healthy in captivity, and these animals are an important educational tool for teaching people of all ages about biology, biodiversity, and the ecosystems of the world. For one thing, many animals in captivity are animals that were found sick or injured, and are being nursed back to health. Danielle Pucillo, a previous volunteer at a zoo, states, “the zoo where I volunteered rehabilitated various birds of prey, …show more content…
According to Savannah Miller, another author, animals born in captivity are not able to return to the wild. Miller states, “From the first minute of life, animals born in captivity are exposed to humans and captive-animal care customs. Because of brain development patterns and learned behaviors during infancy, captive infants do not have the ability to survive in their natural habitats. Release creates anxiety for the animal, as they cannot acclimate to the ‘foreign’ environment, and eventually they perish either by predation or exposure. By keeping them in captivity we save them from certain death.” Of course, this could lead to an argument against breeding animals in captivity, but many of the captive-born animals are likely born unintentionally. Releasing captive-born animals into the wild may end with them going right back to captivity, as one of the sick or injured animals in need of
I . Animal captivity is common in many zoos and aquariums worldwide. It has been going on for more than 50 years and many people enjoy watching it but it needs to end right away. Animals captivity is when they take a healthy animal from the wild and put them in bad conditions that tend to make them die faster. There has been a lot of deaths of animals and people from animals in captivity because they got taken away from their homes, and they aren’t used to being touched or screamed at to do something which they don't do it the wild. Cruelty towards animals in captivity can be reduced if animals could no longer be in captivity.
It is said that in order to protect the wildlife, we need to be educated about the wildlife that inhabits our planet. As humans, and the superior species on Earth, we put exotic animals, aquatic and terrestrial, in zoos or aquariums where people can go to see them to learn more about them in order to protect them. It just so happens that by putting these animals into captivity, we are causing more damage to them, just as damage is occurring in the wild and more species are becoming extinct. Animals should not be held in captivity; it does not save them from going extinct, but helps kill them off.
Freedom is everything to people, and animals alike. But animals in captivity are stripped from this. In SeaWorld and circuses, the animals are living their lives entertaining people and living their lives in cages or small enclosed pens. By keeping animals to remain in captivity people are taking away their freedom, forcing them to be used for entertainment, and not providing animals with the proper care.
Animal captivity has been an ongoing debate for over 60 years. There should be no question about whether animal captivity is wrong. “Hundreds of thousands of wild animals across the world are snatched from natural habitats, forced into captivity and subjected to abuse, both mentally and physically, in the name of entertainment and profit.” (World Animal Protection 1) Places such as the circus use abusive training methods such as, hooks, chains, whips, electric rods, and blunt instruments. (Born Free USA 1) Animals deserve to live freely in the wild. Their freedom is taken away the moment they are put in a cage. When animals are brought into
Although keeping animals in captivity is bad because they don't get to be themselves they should keep animals in zoos or captivity because it helps the species not go extinct, it brings happiness to families that go to the zoo, and zoos bring in enough money to build better exhibits. Even though zoos still have negative impacts on animals lives they should still keep animals in
Did you know that in 2018, The Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus will be retiring their elephant act (Mendoza). The topic I will be discussing with you guys today is animals in captivity, or otherwise known as zoos and aquatic centers. We need to care about this topic because people and protestors are taking it out of hand. Some animals need zoos to care for them. I personally care for this topic because zoos are a fun thing to do with your family or friends. As long as they?re not hurting something they shouldn?t be, I don?t see why it is a bad thing. Today I will be arguing with Haylee on why animals in captivity isn?t a bad thing.
Animals raised in captivity are the most unfortunate of all. They go through grave conditions with no chance of survival. Over 3000 animals die per second due to slaughter. Over 56 billion die because of slaughter per year (www.animalequality.net/food). The consternation behind the walls of slaughterhouses will leave you dumbfounded. The way animals are treated is atrocious. Animals raised in captivity are treated bestially from the time their born to the time they die.
The captivity of wild animals has been a highly debated topic for many years. Zoos and aquariums are huge attractions and can be found all over the world. Movies such as Black Fish and Unlocking the Cage showcase some of the troubling behaviors animals in captivity portray. Advocates for animal rights can use these movies to push their agenda and people who oppose these films say they are forms of propaganda. The fact of the matter is that it does not matter what side of the argument that you are on it cannot be denied that these moves spark mass discussion. The question can be asked are animals places on this earth for our amusement and entertainment or they here that we may cohabit with all aspects of life. Science has proven that some animals have shown signs of distress while being in captivity.
For several generations, animals have been entertaining humans. From sitting in zoo exhibits to being paraded around in flashy circuses, animals, especially exotic ones, have drawn large audiences. A close look at a ferocious lion or a dancing elephant wearing a headdress is often what captivates people, since these spectacles are often unusual and fascinating. However, for lions to be viewed up close and elephants to dance, they must be held captive and trained for desired behavior. This captivity and training raises a question: is captivity detrimental to global animal ecology and health? Many animal activists claim that captivity is abusive, but animal entertainment organizations, such as zoos, circuses, and animal theme parks, promote environmental health through ecological education of children and adults as well as funding research for conservation.
Zoos have been around for thousands of years holding thousands of different species for humans to marvel at. The first recorded instance of animals in captivity was in fifteen hundred B.C. in egypt where animals from all over Africa were kept. Zoos have been used as ways for people to view animals they would most likely never have a chance to see in the wild. This is why zoos have been so popular because everyday people have the opportunity to see animals that they would have never seen before. Unfortunately animals living in zoos have no chance of living in their natural habitat. They will spend their entire lives living in a enclosement being marveled at by humans. Animals should not be kept in captivity because no living creature should
Studying animals in captivity allows scientists to achieve up-close research that cannot be obtained from animals in the wild. Seaworld helps “provide researchers the unique advantage of animals that are trained and able to cooperate”.This type of research is crucial to protect the species in the ocean, especially those that are endangered. Observing captive animals can be done on a daily basis for longer periods of time. It also gives researchers a “controlled setting for science that is impossible to replicate in the wild”. By working with universities and government agencies, Seaworld is enhancing their knowledge and understanding of killer whales in order to help protect the species in the wild. People say that they have zoos to bring back endangered species and then set them free. However, almost half of animals bred in zoos are not endangered. Of the animals that are endangered, if they are ever sent back into the wild they would most likely die. The animals bred in captivity are not socially prepared and have less natural fear of predators.
Animals in captivity are denied the key elements needed to mentally grow and physically evolve as a species. Zoos are solely responsible for taking animals from their natural habitats and placing them in small enclosures where they are not able to live healthier and fulfilling lives that they were to live if not for being captured. Zoos are unable to provide proper habitats that replicate an animal's natural habitat, this can lead the animals to develop harmful diseases such as arthritis due improper climates that are fatal to certain animals, or even neurotic diseases caused by deprivation. Zoos are not suitable to fit the needs of wildlife, as they produce negative effects on an animal's physical health and jeopardize its psychological state.
And this life-changing decision is not made by the animals themselves. This means that even if the animals are unwilling to make this trade, they have no chance to escape but to accept their fates. Therefore it is convincingly to say that this act is robbing animals of their dignity and liberty, which can hardly be acceptable by nowadays moral standard. Which side are you on, do you think we should keep animals should in captivity or in the wild. Here are some reasons why they should be in the wild. When an animals is taken to the zoo it is going to be their for the rest of It’s life. Animals that are born in the zoo and are kept in captivity will start to get weird behaviour, stress, and dangerous. The problem is that some people don’t agree with me and why they think they should be kept in captivity. The reason why some people might want this is because the zoo keepers keep them well fed and protect them from getting killed or driven out of their natural habitat. The rest of this essay will be about why we should not keep these animals in captivity.
