“Inch by Inch” In a fitting model of a persuasive speech, the movie Any Given Sunday includes a key speech, “Inch by Inch”, given by Al Pacino’s character. The speech is given to a team of football players in need of encouragement to face an intimidating game. The structure of his speech, his confidence in delivering it, and inspirational references to his own life makes the speech motivational and inspiring to the directed audience. This persuasion is a perfect example of ethos, pathos, and logos. The coach starts his speech by expressing how he is overwhelmed with their given situation. He reflects to his players the feelings they have. Through this, he is seemingly an experienced model for his players and displays his many flaws and mistakes. With a change of confidence though, he shifts focus on himself to appear more wise than flawed. He begins displaying strong spirit and experience. He started off his motivational speech by using ethos so his players would think of him as a credible person. The first thing Pacino says that makes him sound credible is “Now I can’t do it for you. I’m too old.” By talking about his age, he reassures his players that he has been through a lot in his life and has gain much knowledge from his experiences. Then he talks about how he, “Made every wrong choice a middle-aged man could make,” and how he, “pissed away all his money.” He concludes his sob story with a quote saying he has “chased off anyone who has ever loved him.” Pacino is
Sports movies are knows as blockbuster movies. Sports movies are know for there monologues. A monologue is a long speech by one actor in a play or movie, or as part of a theatrical or broadcast program. Coach Gary Gaines, in the movie “Friday Night Lights” has a speech called “Being Perfect”. “Being Perfect” is a very powerful, emotional, and motivating speech. This speech is not your normal locker room speech. “Being Perfect’s” purpose is to inform the players and others that it doesn't take much just to feel good about yourself.
“An awful lot of people come to college with this strange idea that there's no longer segregation in America's schools, that our schools are basically equal; neither of these things is true.”- Jonathan Kozol. The author of the script “Eye of the Beholder”, Rod Serling, puts his point out there about how segregation is going on all around us and it will never stop. The audience he is trying to portray his message to is everyone. He wants to make them aware of the segregation that is still going on today. Through the use of diction and experience, the author uses pathos, logos, and ethos to show that segregation still goes on today and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
In “Bring Back Flogging”, Jeff Jacoby addresses the problems within America 's criminal justice system. He gives many reasons why imprisonment simply does not work, and suggests that corporal punishment should be used as an alternative. Published in the Boston Globe, a newspaper well known for being liberal, Jacoby provides a conservative view and directs his argument towards those who strongly support imprisonment and view corporal punishment to be highly barbaric and inhumane. While Henry’s speech was not particularly long, it packed quite the proverbial punch through its efficacious use of rhetoric and symbolism, and is looked to even today as an example of persuasive oratory. The implementation of the ethos, pathos, and logos are central to the art of effective communication. They are the necessary building blocks used to win the hearts and minds of an audience. The first integral element, ethos, refers to a character's reputation or credibility. The second element is pathos, which is a character's ability to connect with an audience at an emotional level. The last element, logos, is based entirely on facts and logic. These three modes of persuasion can be seen in the Joe Biden’s campaign video, which when combined persuades the audience to vote for the candidate.
As technologies have advanced to make performing day-to-day tasks easier many have become divided on if technology is helping or hurting society. Many have taken to writing to state their polar stances on the issue. This includes Eric Weiner who wrote “The Cost of Saying Yes to Convenience” and David Cain who wrote “The Danger of Convenience”. They both have similar stances on the issue however present their arguments in different ways. “The Cost of Saying Yes to Convenience” by Eric Weiner is a more effective essay than “The Danger of Convenience” by Eric Weiner because it has a good balance of rhetorical appeals, strong diction, and is organized well which allows the reader to clearly understand it.
