"Just because of your birthdate, are you dangerous?" (Should Driving Be Raised to 18? by John D'Amico and Alex Koroknay-Palicz). Lawmakers and state legislators are considering raising the age for legal drivers from sixteen to eighteen. But doing so will bring more harm than good. First, cars are essential for transportation, and teenagers today desperately need that transportation. Second, the government should focus on bigger issues such as drunk driving or speeding. Finally, eighteen year olds will be just as prone to accidents as sixteen year olds. Therefore, the legal driving age should not be raised. In today's world, cars are used continuously and daily. Much is asked of teenagers and they are immensely busy. Teenagers have jobs, extra cirricular activities, church meetings, homework, school responsibilities and family responsibilities. And on top of it all, they have social lives to maintain. While raising the age for legal drivers has good intentions, it is nearly impossible due to all that is asked of from teens. In the article, "Should 16-year-olds-drive?" it says, "Ryan Moore, 16, got his driver's license in June. He ... needed his license as soon as possible. Both parents work, and he had to get himself from football practive to his job as a lifeguard." Teenagers need cars in daily lives to fulfill all that is asked of them. Thus, the legal driving age …show more content…
The article, "States Urged to Raise the Driving Age" says, "We are worrying too much about teen drivers and not enough about others who cause serious problems on the road. The intense focus on teens diverts our attention from the real threats to public saftey". Some of these threats include drunk driving, speeding, carjacking and texting while driving. There is too much emphesis on teen accidents while these threats are just as dangerous. Therefore, raising the legal driving age will not
Putting teens on the road at a young age as low as 15-16-years-old allows them to gain experience that will help them become more accustomed to the road when they get their driving licences at 18. As stated in the article, Teenage Driving Laws May Just Delay Deadly Crashes, it says “Many teenagers, rather than deal with the extra restrictions for 16-17 -year-olds, are simply waiting until they turn 18, and skipping the restrictions altogether. As a result, a greater proportion of inexperienced drivers hit the road” (40). This proves that teens who do not drive at 16 are more likely to get into car crashes, because they wait til 18 to avoid being restricted like the 16- 17- year-olds. Teens who skip the 16 -17-year-old restrictions are just starving themselves from gaining the early knowledge on driving that is needed to prevent fatal crashes. The same article also says that, “There have been 1,348 fewer deadly crashes involving 16-year-old
The big debate as to whether the legal driving age should be raised to eighteen is an ongoing issue. There are both arguments for and against this matter. Younger drivers, as well as old ones, can cause many life-threatening accidents; therefore, raising the minimum driving age could significantly reduce the number of accidents. The accident rates can be lowered considerably if the legal driving age is bumped up to eighteen. This would mean that no more kids could get hurt or worse, killed in a car accident.
Raising the age to eighteen doesn’t provide them more information to drive. It just takes them longer to be able to travel by themselves. Also eighteen is closer to being able to do drugs and they have an excuse to do drugs. Which is not ok. Also if you raise the age, what happens to the people at age sixteen who have a car already? They just have to take
On the counterclaim side if the driving age is raised to 18 then it will save young lives. On Average about nine teens ages 16-19 are killed everyday from car wrecks. If it's raised to 18 then there won’t be as many teens ages 16 and 17 killed in car wrecks. A lot of teens lose their lives a year do to car accidents. On average about 6,000 teenagers die a year due from car wrecks. So that's why it might be a good idea. According to( DRIVE-SAFELY.NET) “ A sixteen year old is almost twice as likely to die in a car crash then a 30 year old.”
Many people believe that 16 is much too young of an age for people to receive their driving license. While it is true that younger drivers are generally more dangerous on the road than other age groups, raising the age limit to obtain a driver's license will not assist in solving that issue. There are several things that teenagers do that require them being able to drive in order to do them. Kids being able to drive at the age of 16 may take some immediate stress off their parents shoulders by giving them some quiet time, and is it also an incentive for teenagers to be more social. Many teenagers also have jobs at the age of 16, and some go straight into the workforce after graduating at 17 or 18 years of age.
Well we all can't wait to drive and get our license at 16 but some of us are, sometimes a little careless. Did you know that in2013, 2,163 teens in the U.S ages 16-19 were killed and 243,243 were treated in the emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicles crashes. That means that six teens ages 16-19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries. Others are like how would i get to school think about this if there was no cars you would ride a bus or your parents when you were 15 and under you didn't drive and it wouldn't be a problem if you didn't drive till you were 21 nothing would change. Being teens we like to do teen things like party and hang with friends and thing but you have to think
Statistics show that ‘in 2011, about 2,650 teens in the United States aged 16-19 were killed’ and almost 300,000 teens were severely injured from fatal crashes. Every day, 7 teens die from car crashes/injuries. Newly licensed drivers who are aged 16-19 are at a higher risk of fatal crashes than drivers aged 20 and over. As well, many of these crashes are caused by teens that text, talk, or drink and drive. Inexperienced drivers, who are many 16 -19 year olds in the United States cause higher insurance, accidents and crashes, and so, the legal driving age should be increased to 18.
In 2014, 2,270 teens in the U.S. ages 16-19 were killed and 221,313 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. State legislature should raise minimum driving age from 16 to 18 because of the immaturity level of 16 year olds, responsibility, and they would be older and have more experience. If driving age was moved up it would make the roads a much safer place to be.
Many teenagers cannot wait for the day they grab ahold of their licenses. They think of many new opportunities they have waiting for them behind the wheel. Teens may use this opportunity for reasons such as driving to school and work or running errands. Yet, sometimes they can get a little careless and cause a safety concern on the road with other commuters. Therefore, the age limit should be raised to the age of eighteen.
Raising the driving age will cause more death to the older teen by them waiting until their 18 because if they wait they wouldn't have to go through the hoops young teen had to go through. Aubrey’s article states, “ 18 year old drivers increased, and they were behind the wheel and 1,086 more fatal accidents including 18 year olds.” Although scientist have found that 16- year olds have more fatal car crashes. 16 year olds have better experience then 18 year olds because some 16 year olds go through
Turning sixteen is a major turning point in a teenager’s life, you’re finally at the age where you are given much more responsibility and freedom than before. And the biggest responsibility is being able to get your license and drive. And being given the keys to a car means a teenager can move on from depending on their parents. That’s why raising the driving age from sixteen will cause much more harm than good to many teen’s lives. The legal driving age should not be raised, despite the many efforts by the government. There is no need to raise it, the positive effects will not come close to the negatives that come’s along with it, additionally teens need to get prepared for the real world, need to drive to get around, and most of the time car crashes are not even their fault. If push comes to shove their needs to be better driver education and standards to help teens to be more prepared to drive and improving graduating driver licensing. Graduating driver licensing(GDL) or restrictive licensing is a way that states regulate what a teen can do when they first get their license to limit the amount of crashes they get into and to keep them safe. Although the age differs from state to state the same general restrictions still apply. Which include determining whether a new driver can drive with passengers, and even having a curfew set for driving times. In Florida sixteen-year old cannot drive between 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Keeping them off the streets at night. They however cannot
Reading the article Should the driving age be raised? written by Shari Roan, got me thinking about the safety of teenagers as well as adults. The article explains a lot of what the requirements are in order to be driving in all the 50 states. It gives us statistics on how many lives of young adults we’ve lost throughout the years but, thankfully the restrictions that DMV’s are putting on 16 to 17 year olds has allowed the percentages to drop. Although, the accidents are now increasing with drivers in the age category of 18 to 19 year olds. The article reminds us of the risk we as teens put ourselves Reading this article has lead me to thinking that we as teens need to take more responsibility for our actions and agree into raising the age to drive, but of course with some other restrictions and requirements.
The minimum driving age should not be raised or lowered. In Illinois, for example, the driving age is 16 years old. At a first glance, it seems better to wait until teens are older to begin driving. However, it is apparent that no matter what age a person starts driving, it is up to the driver to determine how safely he or she will drive. It would be pointless to raise the driving age for many reasons. The 16-year-old requirement to receive a driver's license is a standard and common rule. All but a few states use this standard. The driving age should be 16 because accidents happen to everyone, 16-year-olds should learn responsibility, 16-year-olds are not the only immature humans, and 16-year-olds have good mental development.
A driver’s license and a set of cars keys are every teenager’s wish at age sixteen and most parents worst nightmare. Most teenagers seem invincible at this age as they back out from the driveway. The parents cringe at the sight of the car leaving the driveway. Mom and Dad pray for the safe return of their child, while the teen’s heart races for freedom. Is sixteen a safe age for teenagers to be behind the wheel? Many factors such as distracted driving play a crucial role in the cause of fatal crashes for teenagers, however can increasing the legal driving age from sixteen to eighteen be a life-saver for teens.
The driving age should not be raised to 21. A 21 year old is too old to start learning how to drive. At 21 you are too busy with work/school to get experience of driving. It is just better for the age to stay at 16 because that is when teens start to become more independent and need to drive to get that independence. These are a few of the reasons why it should not be raised to 21.
