Although there are many reasons why the Spanish-American war took place, the most important was Spain's resentment of Cuba's desire to also become an independent nation. Since Cuba was one of Spain's last territories, they were unwilling to allow independence. As a result, conflict between the two parties erupted. Since Cuba was smaller and less equipped to fight than Spain, their economy took a tumble. Due to the fact that the United States had a great deal of money invested in Cuba's sugar resources, many Americans felt the need to wage war. Additionally, there were separate events that caused anger to American Citizens. One such event was the destruction of a U.S. ship used to protect the American citizens in Cuba. Although the ship's

The American people were very disgusted in the way the cuban citizens were treated and by the way the Spanish treat the Cubans in the beginning of the Spanish - American war. The Cuban’s soon adopted a conception that the more damage that they did to the Cuban mainland, the faster the Spanish would leave Cuba, and the Americans would then help the Cubans to win their independence against the Spain. Although it might not seem like the Mexican-American was a significant event in history, it was actually extremely important and has helped shape the United States into what it is today. This war between the two countries was started because Mexicans believed the border was the Nueces River, while Texans and Americans believed it was the Rio Grande, which caused confusion and anger in both countries. To make things worse, Texas decided to annex itself to the United States at a time when Mexico believed Texas still belonged to them. On April 25, 1846, the United States declared war on Mexico, and the Mexican-American War lasted all the way until February 2, 1848. However, many question whether or not the United States was justified in going
In the summer of 1898, America showed the world their capability by defeating Spain in The Spanish-American War. The outcome of the war was that several Spanish colonies fell into America’s hands and these two were The Philippines and Cuba. They made it clear that they are not going to annex Cuba so they chose The Philippines instead. Many Americans Believed annexing the Philippines was unfair and others thought it was an excellent idea because the Philippines did not know how to work for their own government. The Philippines should have been annexed by The United States because the Philippines did not have a stable government, they were weak which means that other countries like Germany and Japan would easily take The Philippines. The Spanish-American war occurred in 1898 between the United States and Spain where the U. S. interrupted Cuba’s struggle for independence which resulted into the Philippine revolution. Some historians explain that the war publicized by the Hearst and Pulitzer newspapers which blame the sinking of the ship U. S. Maine on Spain, which had been sent to protect America’s interest and Americans living there. There was rising pressure on Congress to push the President to retaliate and go to war with Spain, but the main reason was for Cuba to gain their independence from the Spanish colonization. By defending their move they said that Spain attacked them first. The U. S. came out by using strategy to impose a naval blockade of Cuba and attack the Spanish Navy in the Philippines which was successful. (America goes to war, 2016). The war ended as a result of a treaty signed in Paris which allowed the U. S. to have provisional authority over Cuba took over Guam, Puerto Rico and purchased the Philippine Islands for $20,000,000. (America as World Power, 2016) The U.S. emerged from that war as a world power.
Albert Einstein, physics noble prize winner of 1921, once said "I am not only a pacifist but a militant pacifist. I am willing to fight for peace. Nothing will end war unless the people themselves decide not to go to war." This was basically what the United States was facing during the late 19th and early 20th century as it was presented with the decision to go to war in many occasions. For instance, having experienced an era of tremendous and lucrative industrialization, the United States soon found the need to look beyond its borders. With all the goods that had been produced during the Second Industrial Revolution, the United States had to act in accordance to what was most beneficial for the nation's economy. Thus, this resulted in
American people wanted Spaniards to clear out of American hemispheres. Spain would not leave Cuba so the Americans wanted war with them. Spanish, American, and Cuban diplomats began to meet quietly to solve their differences. The Maine was a U.S. battleship that sailed to Cuba to pick up Americans incase there was any trouble. The ship suddenly exploded and 260 sailors were killed. American experts said that the ship hit a mine, while the Spaniards said that it happened from the inside.
The Mexican American war In the beginning, the Mexicans gain their independence from Spanish empire in 1821. This is how it started. The Mexicans gained their independence from the Spanish empire and the Kingdom of Spain from the Treaty of Córdoba in 1821. Spain was a monarchy until they changed it to a public only a few years later. Their monarchy was not very organized, they were an unstable government for about two years.
The Spanish-American War was sparked by several events, and it also instigated some later occurrences. Imperialism was the act of establishing political and economic control over countries and areas around the world. The United States started doing this after Manifest Destiny, which was around the late 1800’s. America imperialized for power, global influence, a stronger economy, and military security. They eventually imperialized China, Japan, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Alaska, and the Samoa. The United States wanted to imperialize in Spanish areas, which was overall a motive for the Spanish-American War. Yellow Journalism and the rebellions in Cuba sparked the Spanish-American War, which later led to the battles in Cuba and the Philippines.
As I have researched and read different sides of “Jimmy Polk’s War” I have been shown that history is not always right or wrong sided. The United States declared war on Mexico since American forces stationed in Texas were attacked by the Mexican military. President Polk's declaration of war sent to Congress for ratification stated that Mexico "invaded our territory, and shed American blood upon the American soil." Was our war with Mexico the "most unjust war in history", as Ulysses S. Grant, a veteran of that war, described it? Among the Blame America First precincts today, and south of the Rio Grande, this belief is widespread. (“Mexican–American War.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 29 Oct. 2017)

In 1846, the United States took up arms against Mexico. The US Mexican War was over the expansion of slavery into regions acquired from Mexico. Ulysses S. Grant, (General of the Union Army during the Civil War) towards the end of his life, believes the Civil War was a product of the US Mexican War. General Grant, also in the US Mexican War, states the war started as a struggle over the expansion of slavery and became a precursor to the war between the north and south (Johannsen). The larger over the smaller (a David versus Goliath comparison).
