This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki takes place during the summertime at Awgo Beach. The story follows Rose Wallace and her friend Windy, two girls going into their teens , throughout their summer in Awgo. They have been going to Awgo for as long as they can remember. However, this summer they face many new experiences and hardships. Rose’s parent are always fighting with one another and she has to learn how to cope with it. Additionally, there are many relationship issues with the older teens in Awgo and it touches on many topics including pregnancy and relationship issues. We see how Rose and Windy react to these topics and really see their growth and development. Overall, this book did surprise me. The direction the book went in discussing topics like pregnancy and family issues. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was definitely different to what I thought the book was going to be about. I saw it as just a normal book that was going to talk about summertime experience, but it wasn’t. …show more content…
He used different panel sizes and images to emphasize parts of the story. He put detail into main characters and scenes he really wanted us to focus on, and less details into other imagery. One of the the panels that grabbed my attention was when there was the major conflict, we see our antagonist have large panels meaning she was the main focus in the scene. Additionally her text is a lot bigger and contains profanity highlighting the tension and anger in the scene. Our antagonist is drawn with a lot of detail and we can see how angered she is in this conflict. Overall, they style of drawing in the graphic novel was very appealing into the eye and I liked how the artist used purple hues instead of just black and white because I felt it gave a sense of calmness and a summertime feel. The way the story was drawn helps the story flow and helps the reader understand what’s going

Rita Williams-Garcia writes a heartwarming story about family, while
Just quickly looking at this page, something that stands out is the art style. While many comic books often do more of cell shading, this comic book goes for more of a realistic style. Even the color pallet that is used is different, as it uses more subdued colors compared to more vibrant ones. The color pallet that is used sets a darker tone and that the comic book should be taken more seriously. It also tries to
the plot in the story, the minimalistic style, and theme, the author better develops and conveys
One is able to notice the clear connections between Fosters explanation of seasons, and the use of summer vacation in Oates’s short story. The first time summer vacation is mentioned in the story it is followed by mentioning Connie's desire for the boys the she often daydreams about. “...and the rest of the time Connie spent around the house - it was summer vacation - getting in her mother’s way and thinking, dreaming about the boys she met.”(Oates, 2) The trait of adulthood, romance, and sexual experience are all part of the characteristics of summer. The author uses summer in order to set the mood for this novel, as summer initially signifies this romance and sex in this story. The sex aspect of summer is not always used positively as it soon becomes part of Connie’s downfall. On the other side of summer’s characteristics, it can also represent a hot, dusty, and irritable mood. “It was a little flatter, as if the heat was finally getting to him.” (Oates, 4) At this point in the story things turn uncomfortable for Connie as she suspects that Arnold is not who he says he is. The heat of the
The genre historical fiction focuses young readers to inform them about historical and significant cultural events in history, but to do in a way that is comfortable for readers in this age group. One Crazy Summer is a good example of young adult literature of highlighting cultural/historical events and entertaining to its audience. Two characteristics that make this a great novel for middle school readers is that 1- It encourages further inquiry( historical) and 2-The situations and characters are relatable (Y/A novel).
The author of this essay Anna Quindlen purpose of writing School’s out for Summer is that when summer begins it has an effect on many hungry children. She thinks that America is not acknowledging child hunger enough. She thinks that people in America should hear more about child hunger publicly on the news and in the newspaper. She wants this so we could stop this in America.
This made it feel a little like watching a movie. For instance, I could picture Opal, the woman in the chocolate store and imagined her as being skinny with short brown hair. I could really get a sense of the characters. The books was written well in describing the scenery. I could picture the aunt driving up the coast after the funeral and her laying on the bed and eating chocolates and being grouchy. I also like that her pet was a chinchilla. It made her seem even more eccentric and odd.
Two Summers 4-26-18 The plot of my book is realistic. This is because the plot is that Summers dad did not want her to go visit him because he was busy working. However, this was not where Summer is staying. He was in Berlin. I know this because the text says, ¨Listen my Sweetheart´ -- Dad pauses, and there is no more static-- ´Iḿ- not sure- good idea- come- right now.” (Friedman, 63) . This supports my topic a being realistic because that could happen to anyone with anything. If you ask a friend to come over and you say yes then there on there way and you call them and say you are actually busy doing homework. That's almost the same thing.
Kids can be cruel when they are envious as shown in the short story, “All Summer In A Day,” by Ray Bradbury. The sun is what makes Margot happy, and when that gets taken away from her. In this short story there is several acts of cruelty to Margot by her classmates. These kids live in the planet of Venus, and they haven’t seen the sun in seven years, except for Margot. The kids are only nine years old so they haven’t seen the sun since they were two years old, but Margot moved there from Earth when she was four and she remembers the sun and that makes the other kids envious. In the beginning of the story it is the day that the sun is supposed to come out for the first time in seven years! The kids were skeptical except for Margot because she wanted to see it so bad. The kids were starting to prepare for the sun to come out but they were sitting inside waiting. While they were waiting the kids decided to lock Margot in a closet and not let her out. When the sun came out all the kids ran outside to play in the sun that felt so warm and nice on their skin, except for Margot, who was sitting inside in the dark closet. When the kids came back inside they felt sorry for leaving Margot in there. Envy can lead people to commit awful acts and cause shame as demonstrated throughout the character's actions in, “All Summer In A Day.”
The backgrounds are detailed, and on that balance where it looks like animated reality. Veronica Gandini's gifted coloring makes this issue gorgeous to look at. A big appeal of my collection is due to the artwork, accompanied with a fantastic story is a bonus. During the introduction, she plays with childhood palettes, as if out of an animated cartoon show for children. However, Soy's detailed pencilling makes me feel more adult reading it. It's a nostalgic
“It has been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the drum and gush of water, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands.” (Bradbury, 1954) In the dystopian story, “All Summer In A Day” by Ray Bradbury, it takes place on the planet, Venus. A group of children, along with scientists get to live there, while being educated at the underground school. Margot, who is only 9 years old, wasn't born on Venus like the other children, but instead on Earth. She’s the only one who remembers how the sun felt through her skin and how beautiful it shined. On the contrary, the other children are jealous of her because she has some memory of the sun, while they don’t. Jealousy caused the children to harass, isolate, and make her depressed.
The story flows smoothly and the introduction of the characters was easily understood. I like how the book is divided into chapters that are told at different
Francetta Boyd James Madison High School Structure of a poem Summer March 31, 2018 The poem I choose is entitled “Summer” by Walter Dean Myers. The theme of the poem is set in the summer time and represents a season. It points out all the wonderful things and joys of the summer season. The author uses tons of descriptive words in the poem to describe his emotions and all theses awesome things and feelings of summer.
I thought that the illustrations were amazing. They were in a child like manner. Simple yet told a story. The illustrators created them in such a way that any child could recreate them. I loved how the story was not complex. Created in a way that children could grasp the concept. In fact,
One Crazy Summer is such a heralded book because of the narration by Delphine, the main character. Even though Delphine presents herself as emotionless to the other characters in the novel, the readers are able to feel every emotion that she chooses to hide. No book is more deserving than One Crazy Summer for the Coretta Scott King Award because the author’s ability to discuss topics such as child
