Therefore, it is clearly that online communication strongly correlated to the cyberbullying, and this indicate that the internet is creating a generation of anti-social youth. On the other hand, Tartari (2015) pointed that the internet has positive side, for example, the social media platform enables young people to communicate and sharing information and knowledge with others. Young people can get benefits from the process of communication, such as, it develops their communication skills and socialization process, and they can share their emotions with their friends during the process of communication, it positively enhanced their relationship. In addition, Tartari (2015) interviewed teenagers who regularly use social media between 11 and 16 years old in Albania, and Tartari found that the use of social media positively increased teenagers’ communication abilities and technical skills. On the contrary, Goff (2011) indicated the dangers of cyberbullying via the internet in Australian schools, and Goff gives an example to illustrate this point. A group of year 9 boys decide to play a joke on one of the girls in their class, the boys communicate with the girl via the internet and one of them speaks to the girl weekly over the phone, however, the boys finally decide to end this joke and they tell a lie to the girl which is the boy has passed away. While the girl realised that it was a joke, she is humiliated. Hence, it is
Furthermore, the introduction talks about how technology used for communication has been found to be helpful and hurtful in the development of an adolescent’s development. Researchers discovered that adolescents around age 13-14 who were on social media and having healthy peer
Social media itself is a huge danger to society. It causes many suicides within the world because of the cyberbullying and spreading of rumors. “Recent studies have shown that one out of four teens have been the victims of cyberbullying and one out of six have admitted to having cyberbullied someone” (Trautner 1). The internet and social media is supposed to be used to communicate with friends and for searching information, “Kids use technology different than their parents do. Sometimes it is hard for adults to understand that this can even be a possibility” (Trautner 1). It is not supposed to be used to bully someone, especially not to the point where the victim would think about suicide. “One of the statistics that has been highlighted within this news coverage is the threefold increase in the suicide rate for girls ages 10 to 14. The rates for girls in this age group increased from 0.5 to 1.5 per 100,000 during this time period. The increases for boys in this age group were not as high, climbing from 1.9 per 100,000 during 1999 to 2.6 per 100,000 in 2014” (Olsen
As the technology is increasing day by day, many people fall victim to cyber theft. This high development of technology and the availability of internet to most of the public, broadens the pathway of cyber-crime. Cyber-Security was once not a serious issue. But, now many people are complaining about their credit card information getting stolen or sudden drop of credits in their bank account. The internet has become the integral part of today’s generation of people. Many people share their information out in the web through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram etc. Internet has touched every aspect of life right from the beginning to the present. As people share their personal information online; most of their accounts get hacked by cyber-criminal or in other words black hat hackers. And, trusting internet nowadays isn't a wise thing to do.
The internet has created an entirely new world of social communications particularly for youths. There are no more barriers. Family, friends, young and old may now stay in touch with just about everyone, anywhere in the world through the use of email, text messaging, web chat, and instant messaging. Although, most interactions are friendly and in good nature, there are some that are not. The use of technology as a tool to antagonize, torment and intimidate others is now a widespread problem. Sadly, this form of bullying like all others is most common among children and young adults. Research done by Cox Communications on children between 13 thru 18 year-olds, 25 percent said they were cyber-bullied whether online or by cell phone (Cox Com. 2009). Also in 2007, the National Crime Prevention Council reported cyber-bullying as a problem that affected approximately half of all American teens. Since it is popular among this group of American teens, then it is safe look at some of possible reason cyber bullies of this age group are encouraged to take part in such activity.
Rebecca Sedwick, a 12-year-old girl, committed suicide after being repeatedly cyberbullied by 15 girls for many months. Once again, cyberbullying through social media has led to the suicide of a child. (“Phillips, Suzanne”) Social media allows hundreds of ways to communicate with others with electronic devices. Sometimes communicating with strangers, and sometimes unanimous. This idea of constant messages, notifications, and texts can be very dangerous when it comes to cyberbullying because the victim feels like they have no way out, or nowhere to hide. Social media for kids and teens ultimately has only negative effects because it leads to cyberbullying, a decrease in education, and suicide.
Society is now immersed in the era of the digital age. Gone are the days of searching for hours in the library for the answers to a particular question, writing letters that can take days if not weeks to reach its recipient or simply visiting friends to reconnect. The Internet has provided a way to obtain and share a vast amount of information instantaneously on devices such as laptops and mobile phones. As a result, the number of users is increasing at an exponential rate as more people go online and embrace the convenience of the world-wide web. Social media sites allow the user to share personal information, photographs and videos at their own discretion as well as view the information shared by others, such sites have become an integrated part of everyday life especially amongst adolescents. Although, this modern way of social interaction and information sharing has its advantages it can likewise have a negative impact on the lives of some individuals. This essay will suggest that while the Internet has advanced communication and is growing in popularity, the issue of bullying has similarly evolved. Consequently, cyberbullying is now a recognised problem faced in most societies and educational institutions. To deal with this new phenomenon, countries such as New Zealand is proposing changes to existing laws and legislations.
Cyberbullying has been more popular now than ever, with many children and teens worldwide affected by it. Cyberbullying has negative effects and consequences to the mind and can cause depression. Many people are affected by this, and according to studies, “more than one in three young people have experienced cyberthreats online”(Cyberbullying Statistics). This research shows that bullying may harm countless people under the age of eighteen who use the media. The results of cyberbullying can have negative impacts to people of all ages throughout their life and may lead to stress, rash decisions, and even suicide.
Technology and the advancements that come with it have had an enormous influence on American society. The internet, being amongst the greatest technological changes in this country. Establishment of the internet has created a brand-new set of issues, among them, being the introduction of cyberbullying. The internet can have both positive and negative consequences on society. “Positive effects of the internet include: It is easier to do research; communication with family, friends, and relatives is faster; there is a great possibility to earn money while working from home; faster business transactions and cheaper products; along with savings on travel cost.” On the other-hand “negative effects of the internet include: Children, young adults, and even adults become addicted to online games; pornography is rampant; loss of the human touch; criminal elements use the information to advance their malicious intents; cyberbullying; as well as the abandonment of family.”
The article "The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger?" written by Cathleen Cleaver is a clear claim of the necessity of government regulation to control what is being shown on the Internet. To support her claim, Cleaver gives the pornographic web sites as an example. She argues that the regulations used to control the selling of pornography applied to porn stores, magazines, and television should also be applied to the Internet. The reason for such necessity is that it is impossible to control who is actually accessing such web sites. Following this reason, Cleaver's main claim in the article is that children can access pornographic web sites on the Internet. This claim is clearly stated by
Inclusive of these platforms is the rise of social media applications. These are tools which have aided people to send photos and other multimedia files and messages to millions of people at a moment’s notice. These implements have been used to disastrous effects on many college students in various incidences of cyberbullying. [What are the disastrous effects of cyberbullying? With two main points; cyber bullying and sexting, the author briefly discusses what they are and what threat that occurs from them. The article is useful to me because it shows the harmfulness on what could happen on the internet. However, this article is very vague and lakes a certain amount of information to achieve its point.

The 21st Century is roaring, and the use of technology sweeps across the nation like a pandemic. The American lifestyle is being consumed by electronics. Due to the increase of technology, childhood is rapidly transforming and evolving. No longer do children only thrive in fresh air and on playdates, but also with tech savvy gadgets and computers. Children are currently part of a digital generation that has sprouted in a world immersed in technology and the internet, and they are utilizing cell phones, tablets, e-readers and computers every day. Furthermore, because technology is becoming a dominant part in childhood, cyberbullying among children is also increasing. Suicide rates among middle and high school students have increased in the past 15 years due to cyberbullying through social media and direct messaging.
Online users are bullied on social media sites. In “The Dangers of Cyberbullying“, author Christopher B. Davison describes cyberbullying as an agressive, intentional act distributed by an individual or group, using contact in an electronic medium continously and relentlessly against someone else who can’t stand up for their rights (Davison 595). Technology affects bullying in a lot of different forms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr or any other form of online communication. Kovalski and Limber discovered that instant messaging (66.6%) is used most frequently for cyberbullying (598). With the increasing use of the internet cyberbullying is likely to be a growing problem. Lenhart found that 68% of students use the Internet during schoolhours for bullying actions(596). Additionally adolescents use the internet 17 hours on average, with some spending up to
It has been demonstrated in a number of studies that the more time an individual spends on the computer and internet, the more likely they are to be cyber bully victims, perpetrators or both the victim and bully (Mishna, Khourg-Kassabri, Gadalla, & Daciuk, 2012; Sengupta & Chaudhuri, 2011). The most common mediums of cyber bullying are through email, instant messages, or internet social networking sites; however, the medium with the greatest impact on its victims is picture or video bullying (Beran & Li, 2005; Kowalski & Fedina, 2011; Slonje & Smoth, 2008). It has been suggested in the past that children who have access to social networking sites are more likely to be perpetrators or victims of cyber bullying, however, results from one study indicates this is not the case. Alternatively, it was suggested
