The colonies faced insurmountable odds when the American Revolution began, but were able to successfully overcome the most powerful army and navy in the world through contributions such as George Washington’s extraordinary qualities, having knowledge of the lay of the land, gaining foreign assistance, and having the colonist support the cause. George Washington possessed great leadership abilities that led to him being designated the General and Commander in Chief of the United Colonies. He was a Southerner who was very trustworthy and fearless. He had already proved his military abilities and was wealthy enough that he would not be tempted by corruption. He was able to attract soldiers and civilians to volunteer their civic duties and stand by him for the long haul, having a long term goal in view. He led his troops by example. He made sure he did not send his troops out into dangerous territory without he himself being …show more content…
Their first and largest disadvantage was that the war was being fought on American land. The British had to send all of their supplies (food, clothing, weapons, and troops) by ship across the ocean. These ships rarely were able to reach America before being confiscated or destroyed, especially after France and Spain joined the Patriots in the fight. Used to fighting in open, flat terrain the British was unable to use the tactics they were accustomed to. The impassable forest, mountains, and swamps were very foreign to them. Even if the British were able to subdue the territory, they did not have enough troops to occupy and control it due to the very large and spread out lay of the land. By no means, the colonist had all the advantages when geography came into play. They knew the quickest most vulnerable route in which to ambush the British in guerrilla
People responded so positively to Washington because of how wellknown he was and how you could trust him in any situation. One could easily, “distinguish him from all the others. His personal appearance is truly noble and majestic, being tall and wellproportioned” (McCullough 34). People at the time of the American Revolution saw him as this, practically seeing him as a person on perfection. It was also believed by the people at this time that, “a leader must look and act the part” (McCullough 42). Washington made sure that he did this by looking and acting how a leader should and by doing this he lead the Americans to their
Regarded as one of the most beloved figures in American history, George Washington maintains an almost godlike image in the minds of many. Despite his reputation as a leader, Washington was not always flawless in his military exploits. His time in the French and Indian War granted him the experiences and skills needed to be effective as commander of the Continental Army, and not all of these experiences included victories. It was the knowledge Washington gained in the French and Indian War, and the war itself, that helped the colonies to obtain their independence from Great Britain.
George Washington as America's Greatest Leader An independent country requires a strong, wise and dignified administration to guide a highly emotional population through a tough phase while establishing a stable relationship with other nations. At the same time, the first president, guided by his administration, must create a charter to govern the nation. Being the first president of the United States of America and a new face on the world stage, George Washington along with his administration created an excellent blueprint for the recently formed nation. Washington was successful as the first president because his administration maintained peace and neutrality in European affairs, consisted of men
The colonies decided to elect a president on the year 1789. Washington was the first choice for president. During the American Revolution , he was one of the best generals. For example, he was usually fighting along with his soldiers, not just giving orders. Also, Washington was never severely wounded in battle. Many people believe we would have lost the war without George Washington.
How did the colonists manage to triumph in their battle for independence despite Great Britain’s military might? If any of these factors had been different, how might it have affected the outcome of the war?
June 1755, George Washington Became Commander in Chief but to many patriots he was much more than the Commander in Chief. He became the calm voice to those who needed it, George Washington was known to be strongly determined and held a heavy load of the patriotic duty to country. George Washington was the real backbone into the Revolution war and kept it from going under during the hardships and unexpected trials and tribulations that occurred during the long years of war. Without General Washington as the commander and chief, it’s believed that the unthinkable and imaginable could never have succeeded. His faith in the cause and his devotion to the ideals it embodied made him the symbol of America — the spirit of the Revolution. http://www.ushistory.org/valleyforge/washington/george2.html
During the American Revolution, The British and the American colonists had many difficulties and challenges to overcome. Both sides had great disadvantages and advantages, but the in the end the colonists had the most advantages and won their independence from the British. Some of the most important reasons the colonists won was that they were fighting on their own continent and knew the land better than the British, they received help from other European countries such as France and they had a well-experienced General; George Washington.
George Washington, a man of many military achievements, brought ragtag farmers to military men, and destroyed the most powerful army in the world. Washington was appointed the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army on June 14, 1775. Washington, who had military experience before serving in the Continental Army, had never commanded an army of this size. He was appointed leader of the Continental Army because John Hancock, president of the Second Continental Congress, thought of him as a man of great character who would help unite the colonies. Brilliant character and leadership help George Washington win battles over the British, and make farmers into true military men.
George Washington was one of the most skilled, and maybe the best person that could have held the title of founder of the United States of American. He had the capabilities of representing his people on the Continental Congress, the intelligence to flip his misfortunes to his victories on many battles against the British and on his personal life, the generosity of believing in people that were ignored or discriminated by society and more remarkably, the bravery needed to act against the laws and even risk his own life on several occasions for the liberty of his people, among many other aspects that makes him one of the most studied historical characters and sources of inspiration.
When the war started to get really bad they made George Washington Commander-in-chief of the continental army, now they have a better chance of winning the war. They put him in this position because he was a noble, courageous, honest, and loving man so they knew he would be perfect for this position. He was also a delegate to the first continental congress from Virginia. They are group that had some of the first
Once long ago, many Americans especially those who were a part of the very formation of our government, were extremely fearful of the strength of a powerful, centralized government could have. Under the tyrannical rule of the British, Americans were forced to endure unfair taxation practices and abuse of their rights. This is what inspired the American Revolution, where Americans were able to free themselves from the British and aspired to start anew. Now with this fresh start, the fear of returning to a state of previous injustice fueled the creation of the Articles of Confederation; a government with such little power it barely was able to hold the nation together. This ultimately was labelled as a failure due to the fact that it was impossible for each state to stand together when they're so divided and issues were discussed during the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
There is a clear reason why George Washington is the best out of the first four Presidents. He is quite possibly one of the best. He was really the one who pushed our nation to heights that were thought to have been impossible to reach. He also put out laws and regulations that balanced the government, and benefitted the people. There are good reasons as to why Jefferson, Madison, and Adams cut it close that will eventually be touched on.
At the age of 23 years old Washington would become commander of the Virginia Regiment, ( Ellis, Joseph J, His Excellency, 24) although his men both more experienced and senior sought after him as their leader. His character and patriotism led directly to his selection as Commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Army. As commander-in-chief George led his army to a number of very important victories to include the capture of Boston with few defeats such as the trouncing of New York City. George lost many battles, with only one surrender, he continuously and persistently fought the British with unrelenting tactics he conspired the general strategy of the war. He oversaw the training and the organization of the army. Being unanimously elected upon Washington began his first term as President in 1789. He went on to serve for a second term ending his presidency in 1796. All that being said George Washington sounds like a stand up guy and that is why many Americans consider him to be a hero, but there are limits to the stories that are told.
George Washington has major difference from the other big leaders of the time because he didn’t have a formal education. It was a very rare thing at the time because many of the powerful people were rich with a quality education whereas Washington didn't come from a very wealth family and had a low quality education. Nonetheless he still grew his power and became the first president of the United States.
The British had very few, but significant disadvantages/weaknesses. Since America was large and unfamiliar territory for them, it was troublesome to conquer and to hold territory. The British were 3,000 miles from home so it often took months for military orders, troops, and supplies to arrive from Britain after it was is sent out. And also due to distance, they couldn’t communicate with their leaders, reinforcements, and supply lines. They didn’t send their top military leaders, which caused problems. Their Red Coats and militant style made them easy targets to identify in the wilderness or on open fields. Their soldiers were fighting for a King, not for their own cause. They lacked motivation to crush the opposition from the onset of the war. They were also over-confident and cocky. Their goal was persuade the Americans to give up their claims of independence, which was an extremely rigorous objective. Also, the country had been at war for years and citizens were tired of war and war taxes.
