Terrorism is defined as an act of violence that is committed by an organization or a single person in order to be heard. Terrorist acts are usually based on a couple factors such as, historical grievances, foreign policy decision, poverty, and religion. Terrorism is not a new act amongst the world but something that has been around since the beginning. To understand a criminal you must think like a criminal, and understand why they committed a crime or a violent act, then you can prevent and conquer.

I believe that each of these agencies have a different definition for the term terrorism, because they each have different priorities, and focus on different jurisdictions. In my opinion, I feel that there is no universal definition of terrorism, because they do not want to involve any racism in it, they prefer to just blame, whichever person, or group is suspected of terrorism. However, the most common definition of terrorism is, “The deliberate, unlawful use of threats, force, or actual violence to inculcate fear” (Taylor & Swanson, 2016 P.8). For this reason, I do believe that by not having a universal definition for this term, it does limit the capabilities of countering terrorism, because it causes miscommunication. One agency might
Terrorism is the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. Recently on September 11, 2001 a terrorist group calling themselves Al-Qadea, planned a coordinated attack. Thus high jacking four planes which were targeted at what some people call the heart of the United States, (Twin Towers, Pentagon, and another landed in PA). With this said we call these people terrorists.
Terrorism is referred by a criminal act which influences someone beyond the immediate victim, and commits an act of violence that draws the attention of the population, government, and the world (Terrorism research). Goodman explains that Terrorists explode the values they claim to fight. Their victims’ blood blurs and blots whatever ends were meant to justify the carnage (Goodman, 2010, p. 89) We all remember September 11, 2001 and how many innocent lives and people where effected, and that that is what they aim for. The more devastating the damage, the more inhumane, the more avidly is it sought by the strategist, ideologues, and theologians of terror (Goodman, 2010, p. 90).
This definition outlines that the actions within terrorism is contradicting to the law. The key component of definition of terror is that the people who are being targeted are civilians. The attacks of the 11th of September took place on the America soil, and soon after the expression and the definition of ‘The war on terror’ was set by President Bush. The Bush-Cheney administration defined terrorism as following:
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Some will say this is a true statement another would say this is an ignorant statement. It is simply up to interpretation. But going deeper into the statement we must always remember that “words mean things.” So what does the word terrorist mean? Or better yet, what is the meaing of terrorism. If we can define terrorism then untimately we will define what is a terrorist.
If one were to ask a cross-section of individuals to define what terrorism means, there would ultimately be multiple definitions similar in many aspects but not able to be unified to create a single definition. Terrorism is a
Terrorism is difficult to define because it has different meanings as time has changed. Terrorism is said to be a social construct which is the way different people view social and political realities. I could only imagine what the word “terrorism” was defined as in early eighteenth-century. As is states in the 8th edition of the book Terrorism and Homeland Security, “Some scholars have opted for a single definition stating that terrorism is an act or threatened act of violence against innocent people for political purposes (Laqueur, 1987, 1999). Terrorism will never have a single definition.
The word ‘terrorism’ comes from the French Revolution ‘terrorisme’, ‘terrur’ which comes from a Latin verb that means ‘I frighten’. Terrorism is an act that is committed by people who work with the government – usually by killing people, threatening them, the use of illegal force and making them afraid for their own political purposes (Furze et al., 2015).
Despite the many attacks in France, little change has occurred in the deterrence of future attacks, the Islamic State promulgating these attacks is best understood as a terrorist organization based on radical Islamic views because of its ties to Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden and Zarqawi. According to BBC News there have been over 16 attacks in France since 2012 and 31 terror attacks over all against the West to an article by Brooke Singman from Fox News World.
