Do you ever think that homework is a cruel and unfair thing that teachers give to students? Do your kids think homework is unfair? I’m here to tell you why teachers give homework when they have enough time in class to make it classwork. Studies indicate a negative relationship between children's amount of homework and their physical health. Most kids think homework is unfair because it takes away their play time. For example reformers in the progressive era depicted homework as a “sin” that deprives children of their healthy amounts of outdoor actives. Students in high-achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society. One of the many reasons why kids don’t do homework
The debate on homework has come up once again because much research has shown that it’s not very effective. But first what is Homework? “At the beginning of the twentieth century the term homework… referred to labor done to pay in one’s home, and in particular to sewing and other manual work which filled the afternoons and evenings of many young children in large cities” (Homework Destroys Family Life). Homework was considered to be work the children did at home such as chores or actual job outside the home. Over time the term evolved when education became more important and child labor laws were passed to enforce children to focus on education instead of working. This debate is not anything new because this has come up in many centuries before.
One reason we shouldn’t have homework is because kids don’t get enough sleep for the next day. “We really want the kids to go home at 4 o’clock, tired. We want their brain to be tired,” Kelly Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen Said in an interview with a local TV station.” Said time.com. First, Kids are already tired from school when they get home. But, with homework, they get tired faster and then don’t even get enough sleep for the next day. Like the principal said they think that making kids tired is learning, but it doesn’t really mean we’re learning more, it is just wearing us out and making us not want to work any longer.“Brandy Young told parents, she would not formally assign any homework this year, asking students instead to eat dinner with their families, play outside and go to bed early.”Is what the article time.com explained. Consequently, homework makes kids not get enough sleep at night because they are up working on their homework half the night or even longer. These kids shouldn’t have to do this. According to Katie Reilly, “Second graders, for example, should do about 20 minutes of homework each night, but
Roberto Nevilis, a teacher in Venice, changed history when he created the first use of homework in 1095. Since then, students’ opinions of homework haven’t changed. Roberto Nevilis started homework as a way of punishing his students for not doing their work. Nowadays, homework is assigned to help students receive more practice for what they learned in school that day. Despite the good intentions that homework is supposed to provide, it actually proves more harm than good. In the twenty-first century, the increase of homework negatively affects American teens’ sleep schedules, stress levels, and after school opportunities. Parent involvement in homework can turn into parent interference.
Some believe homework is just stressful. Students should not be given homework on a nightly basis. Article 3 states “It was reported in a study that 89% of American students in grades 3 through 12 felt stressed about homework”.
Too much homework can cause stress and other health issues. Also, students are working more than the recommended amount of time on homework, and this takes away from family time and free time, as well as time for sleep. When it comes to doing homework, students also want time to relax and enjoy other activities. Shouldn’t students get less homework so that they can be happy and have more time with family and friends? Administrators, teachers, students, and parents need to address this issue and inform people about the effects of homework on students in America. If teachers and parents tried to reduce the amount of homework there would be a decrease in stress and anxiety and an increase in happiness! “Homework makes it so I can’t spend time with my kids and family and I resent
Do you hate homework so much that you want to go and murder it in your dreams? I think that teachers should stop assigning so much homework. Why? Well, first of all, students need time in the evenings to themselves. They need to be able to have some time to themselves and recuperate from all of the stress of going to school. As we continue, I will begin to tell you of all the reasons why teachers shouldn’t assign any homework.
Although adults and kids may say homework is good for kids it is argued that it can be bad. It can give kids anxiety and more stress secondly homework only benefits certain kids so why should we do homework if it does not benefits us. We also do a lot of work in school as it is that is why we should not have any more homework.
In today's current issues in many schools all around the world is that teachers are handing out overloads of homework. Leaving the parents questioning of why they're kids have to struggle with so much homework at such a young age. Students shouldn’t get homework so that they can get more efficient sleep, more involve in their social life, and spend time with their families. Homework should be an overview on what the students learn that day in class not an overload of the week in one day.
Did you ever go home to be pounded with homework? Is there just to much you can’t focus and do it all. Kids have sports and other activities to do too. Maybe children shouldn’t get as much homework as they do each day. Homework is proven to cause sleep problems, bad grades, and physical health problems. Studies prove that too much homework is actually not good for your health.
So sometimes homework is stressful children and you don’t want that. A study by a group of Australian researchers found the average scores of kids who have spent a lot of time of homework, showed clearly that when more time was spent on homework students were getting lower scores. Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at stanford university found out kids stressing over homework has some bad effects like students lives outside of school, including friends and family, and other activities. Also Tommy Convey said ‘’sometimes I will stress over homework and because of that I can’t go outside. This proves that kids get stressed out over
In 2008 the MetLife American Teacher series polled students, teachers, and parents on their feelings and thoughts about homework and the results were as follows; one-third of parents rated the quality of homework given as fair or poor, one-quarter of students say that they as if their homework is busywork and unrelated to what they were learning in class (MetLife). But, one of the leading reasons that people support homework in elementary levels is because they believe it can kick-start healthy and even necessary habits. These habits include; time-management, study skills, independent working, etc. It is unrealistic to expect students to gain important life skills from poorly created and unrealistic homework.
Homework has been considered apart of every child’s learning experience in America, but there are many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in, besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this, homework can be very unhealthy is child’s life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive. Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives.
Are you a student who does not like the idea of homework? Well what a coincidence, I am one too! Did you know that homework is given to students by teachers every day because they think that it will help them learn better as well as getting more practice, but in reality homework just affects a child's learning in a negative way.
Statistics about too much homework are illuminating: too much homework can lead to being counterproductive. After a school day, kids come home and do their homework that can cause stress to a family that has other needs or issues, such as low income. Too much homework can have a negative effect because they might be from a home that doesn’t have everything they need. They might not have parents or older siblings
What teachers think are helping children are actually hurting them. Homework might not be what you think it is, it causes extra stress on kids and family. Teachers give homework too help kids but really it’s hurting more than helping. Homework is hurting kids more then it’s helping, homework stresses kids out so much they start too have a nervous breakdown and don’t get enough sleep. Homework really only helps kids in the last three years of high school and kids homework is getting too be too much and too hard.
