In the article “Why I Homeschool: The Answers Change Almost as Fast as My Kids Do. But My Commitment to At-Home Learning Remains Strong.” Amy Thornton-Kelly initially home schooled her three children in order to spend more time with them. This was her only reason, or so she thought. Amy Thornton–Kelly explains the many reasons why homeschooling is the best decision she has made. First, she explains that once her husband and her considered homeschooling “the floodgates opened” to the many benefits of homeschooling. It alleviates stress, allows her kids to learn in a healthier environment and allows her to teach her kids in a more profound way. Second, Thornton-Kelly states that homeschooling allows her kids to better master subjects, …show more content…
If Amy would have been trying to reach a scholar community, she should have had to include more research, statistics and different
psychological theories on the effects of homeschooling, be it either positive or negative effects. Amy Thornton-Kelly makes a valid argument as to why homeschooling is a good choice, but does not have any research or statistics to back up her theories. Her argument relies heavily on personal experience, and generalizations. By not having conducted any research, readers have no hard evidence or facts to truly know if homeschooling is a good option for them. Homeschooling could be the best choice for her and her family, but it might not be the best decision for other parents. If Amy were to have quoted research that may have been done or referenced case studies done on children who have been homeschooled compared to children who have not been home schooled, then her argument would have more credibility. Homeschooling not only takes away all your time, but it also costs a lot of money to homeschool. When homeschooling, you’re responsible for everything; including books, food, and extracurricular activities. Amy does not mention any of this. However, Amy appeals to the audience by stating that she started off as a regular mom taking her children to school and working a full time job. Amy
Home schooling is another way that children can achieve an education in a smaller and more relaxed learning environment. It also allows children to go at their own pace and have more time to get their work done. Home schooling can be a better way for kids to get their education especially if the child has a problem with being around other kids or being away from home. Home schooling allows children to learn at home in familiar surroundings, which can have a positive effect on kids if they have trouble adjusting to a classroom and being around other kids. Being at home, doing school work also allows kids to work in a stress free environment by means of getting one-on-one attention if they are having difficulty understanding or solving a problem.
In the other hand parents who choose to home school their kids are faced with a great deal of advantages. Home schooling a child means that a parent has to give 100 percent dedication into teaching there child. One great asset to home schooling is that children are often way ahead in their grade work as compared with their peers in public school. They learn to read much earlier and advance through their subjects much faster and in a more thorough manner, due to more individualized attention and subject-specific attention. By being taught at home, the student has immediate access to the "teacher", and can ask questions at just about any time without having to worry about other students and their learning habits. Parents don’t have to worry about the safety of their child when it comes to home schooling. The child is in the home and always being watched if something where to happen it would be the parents’ responsibility and the parent would know what to do
Not long ago, my parents received an endless amount of criticism, similar to the Walls’ family, for their decision to homeschool my siblings and me. Many “feared” for us, because according to them, there was no way we were going to learn effectively at home, what we could in a formal school. My mom tells me stories of how people she’d known expressed genuine concern over the idea of educating children in a different way than what is deemed “normal.” I do not blame these people for their concern, as they were raised in a society that emphasizes a single approach to learning. Although there were definitely times growing up when I wished to attend a brick and mortar school like “normal” people, after a certain age I genuinely appreciated my parent’s decision. Being home-schooled has taught me so much more than just the basic principles of education. I grew up being highly self-reliant due to my online school requiring students to be almost entirely responsible for keeping up with their work. Similar to college, I had a syllabus provided to me, and had no one other than myself to make sure I was on top of everything. This helped me to become a responsible and well-organized individual. I also gained a quality education, despite all of the fear and concern of those around me. I still have to answer the questions, “Why were you homeschooled?” and, “Didn’t you want to go to regular school?” more
Being homeschooled gives you options for yourself and your surroundings. “They’ve had complete control over their bodies, minds and spirits almost all their lives. As a result, they know exactly who they are and what they’re passionate about” (Source B). Homeschooling makes you think outside of the box. Think learning on a new level, you can still
Before presenting both the positive and the negative aspects of homeschooling it is worth mentioning that the deciding factor for parents choosing to homeschool as opposed to public schooling generally falls into a biased opinion of public schooling. As mentioned in an NPR radio interview, “the number one reason parents give is the desire to provide religious or moral instruction and that the second most popular reason, closely followed behind, was a concern about the school environment” Martin, M. (2013). These type of reasoning for home schooling presents some valid question, such as, who determines what the best approach or the best form of education? Is the quality of education
Any controversial topic has evidence for and against it in abundance. Homeschooling is not different in this aspect, however, Ray is able to give a very compelling argument for homeschooling’s effects on the public good. While his argument is not perfect and has weaknesses and flaws his appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos is able to argue his point effectively. It may not be long before parent’s rather than telling their children about the “good ole days” where record players were used will instead be talking about how they went to public schools every
Summary: Michael Romanowski wrote an article called "Common Arguments about the Strengths and Limitations of Home schooling." Home schooling is continuing to grow rapidly in many places. He explains that home schooling serves children equally well as public schools. Romanowski supports the main idea by giving claims that home schooling helps a child improve their social skills, children who are homeschooled are more likely to become academically successful, a student is not put on time limit and they are not told to put everything up and focus on a new topic. Home schooling allows children to learn to socialize with older people and stills allows them to socialize outside of their home with community activities. When the parents are closely involved in the student's academic work
Homeschooling, down to its essence, is just school done in the comfort of your home. Compared to regular schooling, there is far more interaction and one on one time with the teacher, and more dedication on the homeschooled and the homeschooled alone. This is great for those who cannot learn with others, be it that they cannot keep up with the rest of the group or they simply cannot focus on what is going on with a number of others doing the same.
Through my personal experience and research I have accumulated that homeschooling has become more appealing to the average American family. Through my research I found more families should consider the task of taking on homeschooling to focus on the student’s personal needs and education style. Charlotte Postlewaite writer of "The Home School Debate” opens her article with “ Homeschooling is perhaps the fastest growing option that parents consider for alternative education and school choice. According to The National Center for Education Statistics, in 1999 about 850,000 students’ ages five through 17 with a grade equivalent of kindergarten through grade 12 were home-schooled.” Thus, preparing their student for college.
An article from 2015 about homeschooling and public school stated that “it’s estimated that as many as 2 million American students are being educated at home.” There are several families that would prefer homeschooling over public school for several reasons, which will be discussed in this essay. The two topics that will be discussed are homeschooling and public school. There will be multiple topics discussed in this essay, such as pros and cons of homeschooling and public schooling, and which option would be the best option for certain types of families and students. These two topics will be contrasted by explaining which topic would be the better option for specific groups of people, and certain families. The purpose of this essay is to describe the advantages and disadvantages of home and public schooling. Also, the purpose of this essay to show statistics about which system of education would be best for certain families, specifically those who are low-income families, and want the best option for their children. Whereas public schooling is inexpensive and gives children a chance to make friends, homeschooling is the best option because it gives children a safe, and more compatible learning environment.
On the other side, there are people who believe that homeschooling is good for children because it allows parents to spend more time with their kids. In the article “Homeschooling is Good for families,” the author talks about how they took their kids and traveled all over to teach their kids about geography (Brown). They talked about how they had spent 3 months in Australia to learn not only about geography but geology, flora, fauna and literature (Brown). They are spending more time with family traveling and learning new things from experience. If they were in school they wouldn’t be able to travel, but instead they would be sitting in the class room seeing pictures, verses experiencing it first hand. If both parents work, it is hard for them
Despite home-schooling’s controversy because of the lack of teaching credentials for parents and socialization, homeschooling has big benefits for children. The first benefit is that while homeschooled, students receive individualized education. Parents spend all their time and attention to their children. Parents can devote all their time and attention to their children. Martin points out that parents understand their children best (Martin). Therefore, they can choose the best method to motivate their children to learn. “Parents are also able to evaluate their children on a daily basis and provide further instruction if needed” (Martin). Individualized education also provide necessary help as needed. As a result, homeschooled students achieve
B. Preview – Traditional homeschooling can be problematic to a student’s life skills and overall development. The social learning aspect of school, which is lacking in homeschool, directly transfers into college and the workplace. Most teenagers and kids need to be supervised at every moment or else they will not do their work and, while at home, it is hard to find the motivation to do schoolwork.
The two things that stuck out to me was that there is no financial support for individuals who chose to homeschool their children, and there are more benefits than I thought about homeschooling. Firstly, when you opt to homeschool you child you are not given money to help with the cost. This makes it very difficult for families who are in poverty to homeschool a child. It costs more money for a child to be homeschooled versus going to a public school, but it does cost less than attending a private school. A child who is homeschooled can do online schooling, but most of the time it is a parent or other older individual teaching a child during the day. If a family is financially challenged it is hard for a parent to stay home to teach their children. It was said that children might not be receiving homeschooling education from someone who is not fully capable of teaching a student. In addition, there are also many positives that come from homeschooling. Homeschooled children do well on standardized tests, and are known to be self-directed learners. They also have the educational freedom to choose or for their instructor to choose what they want to learn. They can learn at their own pace so they can spend more time on things that are difficult and move quickly on things that are easy. The children doesn’t need to be held back by others if they want to move on. It is a much more
In the ten-year period from 2003 to 2012, the number of American children 5 through 17 years old who were being home schooled by their parents climbed by 61.8 percent. There has been drastic increases in home education over the last several years. It is estimated that a total of 2 million students (2.3%) are home schooled in the U.S today. This begs the question, why home school?
