![Cover Letters – What Are They?
Many job advertisements request that you send by email, both a CV and a cover letter. While you should
always tailor your CV to each application, your cover letter is your chance to explain in more detail why you
are 'perfect' for the job you are applying to.
It is better to make your cover letter the primary text of your email instead of sending it as an attachment
(unless the application instructions tell you to do differently). This increases the likelihood that the cover
letter will be read. Also, for the email subject line, you should include the job title and job number if that is
given too.
WHAT TO SAY
The content and style is for you to decide, but you will need a solid structure to have the best chance of success!
Here are some guidelines:
INTRODUCTION (PARAGRAPH 1)
> Explain why you are writing; catch the reader's attention by stating your years of experience or
something similar.
> If you are responding to an advertisement, say where you saw it.
WHY THIS JOB? (PARAGRAPH 2)
> Explain why you are interested in the job and the organization.
> Check the grganisation's website. Let the grganisation know you have not simply sent out multiple
copies of the same letter to different employers. Try to say something specific or original about the
company. Also, explain what factors attract you to them – do not just repeat text from their publicity
material.
WHY ME? (PARAGRAPH 3)
> Use the third paragraph to explain why you are well-suited to the position. Refer to relevant skills,
experience, or knowledge that you have. (Try to avoid using exactly the same phrases which appear
on your CV).
> Match what you say to the requirements given in the job advertisement.
CONCLUSION (PARAGRAPH 4)
> Reiterate your desire to join the organization.
> Add a 'look forward to hearing from you'-type statement.
> End "Yours sincerely" or other suitably businesslike closing, with your name and title.
TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL COVERING LETTER!
> Do not exceed one page.
> Write to a named person if you possibly can - rather than 'Dear Sir or Madam'.
> Check your spelling and get someone else to read it over.
> Do not start every sentence with "I".
> Give evidence for all your claims.
> Be enthusiastic!
> Do not repeat your whole CV.](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F03c9815b-466a-4067-b5eb-c4c05fb1c777%2Fc287fd07-4395-406c-ad24-2baaf548953e%2Fop5o7en_processed.png&w=3840&q=75)

Subject: Application for Event Manager (position #8923).
Dear Ms. Al-Jufairi,
I am writing in regard to your advertisement for an Event Manager which I saw at your company website.
Based on my more than 20 years of experience in the industry, I believe I would be extremely well-suited for
this position.
I am interested in the job of Event Manager because I enjoy the new and unique challenges that come when
working with a variety of customers. Working at the Atlantis Palms specifically appeals to me because the
many types of events that are hosted there will allow me to work with this variety. For example, the
"themed-conferences" and "fantasy weddings" mentioned at your website would be extremely interesting
projects for me to be a part of. Also, your corporate philosophy about guests and belief in on-going employee
training, which are explained at the Jumeirah Group Hotels website are two important factors that greatly
attract me to your company.
I believe I am well-suited to your position due to several skills I have. First, my organizational skills are very
highly developed. I have been in charge of every facet of event planning, starting from the time the client
first arrives to discuss her or his idea through to the completion of the event itself. Second, my interpersonal
skills have allowed me to work successfully with all employees. Third, technical skills such as designing web
pages for events and using Excel to track budgets and vendor accounts are among my strengths too and
based on your job announcement that states a need for an events manager with significant Excel knowledge,
I will be able to help you immediately. Finally, I am also well suited educationally, having both a Diploma in
Business Studies and a Diploma in Event Management which are both specifically noted in your
advertisement. For further details on my skills and qualifications, please see my attached CV.
I feel my range of skills and education would be an asset for your organization, and I hope to hear from you
on (+44) 5555599 or by e-mail at jane.doe@gmail.com
Your sincerely,
Lisa Barlow
