2 Debate: Health Services and Personal Choices are the only Determinants of Health Hello, everyone; in this video, I will present a debate I had with a friend regarding personal choice as the only determinant of health and the use of collaboration and competing conflict management styles to convince them that there are other determinants of health. Why is this debate important? Well, social determinants of health are crucial to preventing diseases and improving the population's overall health, which is the goal of public health. My friend works out regularly and sees workouts as a personal choice and as crucial to the prevention of diseases (both mental and physical). Here is the debate. Me : Hey, I love your passion for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You routinely workout, and you are conscious about your diet. I want to get your opinion about the statement that health services and personal choices are the only determinants of health. Friend : Thank you. I agree with this statement. Indeed, health services play a critical role in promoting public health. Access and quality of health services directly impact the health of the population. Also, making healthy lifestyle choices promotes our health as healthy choices help prevent disease and promote health. These two factors are the only determinants of health. Me : Are there other additional factors that determine our health? For instance, one’s genetics. Friend : Scientists have overemphasized the impact of genetics and family history on health. Any person who makes negative personal choices increases his or her chance of diseases. For example, the consumption of junk foods makes all of us susceptible to lifestyle conditions such as obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. If genetics is a determinant of health, some people would still develop such lifestyle diseases even after upholding healthy lifestyle choices. Me : ( Collaborating conflict management strategy ) I agree that genetics alone may have little impact. However, genetics is a key determinant of health. Consider an example of obesity; some
