In a comparison of Ford Conventional vehicles and
hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) the HEV proved to have
a greater range (450-550 miles) than did the
conventional vehicle (350 miles). And, as might be
expected, these numbers were the same for gasoline
range. In terms of economy, the HEV was 30-50%
better than the conventional vehicle. This in turn, meant
less frequent fill-ups for the HEV. Burning less gasoline
causes the HEV to be 95% cleaner-far friendlier to
the environment. And finally, this study found that the
HEV performed more like a V-6 (more powerfully)
than the conventional vehicle, whose performance was
considered more like that of a 4-cylinder engine.

You are an engineer working on a project and your prototype has failed prematurely. You question whether or not a key component of the prototype was manufactured with the correct material. There are two way to check for the material properties. The first way is to have a material certification done to confirm the exact material composition. This will take some time. The second method to confirm the material properties is to make an ASTM test sample and test for the material properties. This tensile test was completed on a test sample with an initial diameter of .501” and an initial length of 2”. The Load-Deflection data for this tensile test is below. Use this data to answer the first set of questions on the Final Exam in eLearning. A. Determine the Ultimate Tensile Strength B. Determine the 0.2% Offset Yield Strength C. Determine the value of the Proportional Limit D. Determine the Modulus of Elasticity E. Determine the Strain at Yield F. Calculate %…

The selection of material is based on what is
required to performance the function.
The tolerance is determined by the function, not
the preference of designer or manufacture.
In the selection of manufacturing processes, the
number of components to be manufactured
needs to be considered, as the capital
investment needs to be considered.

Direction: Graph the heating curve of ethanol using the information given. Check off each item as you add additional information to your graph so that none is missed.
Background information of Ethanol:
Boiling Point = 78 0C
Melting Point = -114 0C
Starting Temperature = -120 0C
After two minutes, frozen cold ethanol starts to melt. It takes two minutes to melt completely.
After eight more minutes, it begins to boil. It boils for six minutes.
Heat is added for two more minutes until ethanol reaches 80 0C.
Label “melting” where this takes place.
Label “vaporization” where this takes place.
Label “phase change” where a phase change occurs.
Indicate where ethanol is only a SOLID, only a LIQUID, and only a GAS.
Of the three phases, label which phase has: weakest IMF, strongest IMF, and medium IMF.
