2 Deviant behavior is found in every individual on this planet. Though it manifests in very different ways and in varying levels, depending on the individual in question. In some cases, a person does not even have to do anything to be considered deviant. Sociologist Erving Goffman used the term stigma to reference characteristics or traits that are viewed as being different from the norm. (Henslin, 2019) People are judged for their appearance (a birthmark or big ears), or from being associated with someone who has been ostracized for their deviant behavior. (Paying for the sins of the father). Deviance is ever-present in all forms of media as well. For instance, the television show Lucifer , a show about the devil quitting his job in Hell and opening a nightclub in Los Angeles, California. The character Lucifer fits the “bad boy” archetype as described by Gopaldas and Molander (2019). He is juvenile, exhibiting signs of hypersexuality and substance abuse. He uses humans for his own sexual gratification (both women and men) and is an all-around despicable rogue. After a girl he is involved with is murdered, he finds himself working with an LAPD homicide detective, who he quickly begins to have feelings for (though he does remain in denial of that until several seasons in.) The detective and others in her department are put off by his deviant behavior in the beginning, doing everything they can to keep him at a distance. While he does the opposite, ingratiating himself with the detective’s boss, getting himself assigned as a civilian consultant for the LAPD. After working with the detective for several months, he realizes that she will never return his feelings if he doesn’t get some help, so he begins seeing a psychologist. With the help of his psychologist, his brother Amenadiel the angel sent to return him to Hell but ends up staying on Earth after falling for the demon Mazikeen, and others, he sets out to correct his behaviors and get to the root of his problems in an effort to curb his deviancy.
