Ashes of Roses

By Elaine Goodale Eastman (1863–1953)

[Born in Mount Washington, Berkshire Co., Mass., 1863. Died in Hadley, Mass., 1953. Apple-Blossoms: Verses of Two Children. 1878.—All Round the Year. 1881.—Uncollected Poems. 1881–88.]

SOFT on the sunset sky

Bright daylight closes,

Leaving, when light doth die,

Pale hues that mingling lie,—

Ashes of roses.

When Love’s warm sun is set,

Love’s brightness closes;

Eyes with hot tears are wet,

In hearts there linger yet

Ashes of roses.
