Alain Chartier (Fifteenth Century)
Chartier, Alain (shär-tyā’). A French poet; born in Bayeux, Normandy, about 1386; died in 1449. Early taken into royal favor for his brilliance in rhetoric and rhyme, he won fame with the ‘Book of the Four Ladies’ (1415), inspired by the battle of Agincourt, and the ‘Ballad of Fougières’ (1449), a patriotic piece.
