Ambroise Lucien Rollin (1692–1749)

Rollin, Ambrose Lucien (rō-la‘). A West-Indian historian; born at Trois Rivières, Guadeloupe, in 1692; died at Pointe á Pitre, in 1749. He devoted his leisure to researches upon the Caribs and other Indian tribes, and published several works still considered authoritative. They include: ‘History of the Indians’ (1739); ‘The Indians and the Spanish Conquest’ (1840); ‘History and Description of the Caribs, their Condition after the Conquest’ (1843); ‘Civilization of the Indians Compared to their Social Condition’ (1845); and ‘The Incas of Peru and the Spanish Conquest’ (1748).
