Arsène Houssaye (1815–1896)
Houssaye, Arsène (ö-sā’). A French novelist, dramatist, and critic; born in Bruyères, near Laon, March 28, 1815; died in Paris, Feb. 26, 1896. He came early to Paris, and had written two novels at the age of twenty-one, ‘The Sinner’ being still remembered. He wrote ‘The Caprices of the Marchioness,’ ‘The Comedy at the Window,’ and other successful light plays, and became a stage manager. His later novels include: ‘The Beautiful Raffaëlla’; ‘Marion’s Repentance’; ‘Romance of the Duchess’; ‘Women as They Are’; ‘Women of the Past’; etc. His volumes of criticism are: ‘History of French Art in the Eighteenth Century’; ‘Portrait Gallery of the Eighteenth Century’; and ‘Studies of Voltaire and Rousseau.’
