Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814–1890)
Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow [“Mrs. Partington”]. An American journalist and humorist; born in Portsmouth, NH, July 12, 1814; died in Chelsea, MA, Nov. 25, 1890. From 1840 to 1866 he was editor of various journals in Boston. His ‘Life and Sayings of Mrs. Partington’ (1854) gained for him worldwide popularity. This was followed by ‘Knitting-Work’ (1857); ‘Partington Patchwork’ (1873); and ‘Wide Swath,’ a volume of collected verse (1882).
