Casimir Delavigne (1793–1843)
Delavigne, Jean François Casimir (de-lä-vēn’). A French lyric poet and dramatist (1793–1843); born at Havre. He struck a patriotic and popular chord in his ‘Messenian Odes’ (1818), satires directed against the monarchy of the Restoration. His historical dramas and tragedies are numerous; among them are: ‘Louis XI.’; ‘The Sicilian Vespers’; ‘Marino Faliero’; ‘Don John of Austria.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
