Cecco d’Ascoli (1269–1327)
Cecco d’Ascoli (chek’ō däs’ko-lē), properly Francesco degli Stabili. An Italian poet and student of science and demonology; born at Ascoli, 1269; died in Florence, Sept. 16, 1327. For his heretical opinions he was burned at the stake. His encyclopædic poem, ‘Bitternesses,’ of which he lived to complete four books, treats of astronomy, meteorology, stellar influence, physiognomy, minerals, and kindred subjects.
