Charles Anthon (17971867)
Anthon, Charles. A celebrated American classical scholar; born in New York City, Nov. 19, 1797; died on July 29, 1867. He was for many years professor of ancient languages at Columbia College. A beautiful edition of Horace first made him famous among scholars. His best-known work was an edition of Lemprière’s ‘Classical Dictionary’ (1841). He was also the editor of over fifty classical textbooks.
