Charles Collé (1709–1783)
Collé, Charles (kō-lā’). A French dramatist (1709–83). For the Duke of Orleans’s theatre he composed several light comedies, ‘There’s Truth in Wine,’ ‘The Knave Gallant,’ etc. Of his sentimental pieces, ‘Henri IV.’s Hunting Party’ is best known. As a lyrist he holds a place next after Béranger among French poets. His ‘Historic Journal’ (3 vols.) is for the most part a mass of calumnies against his contemporaries.
