Charles Perrault (1628–1703)
Perrault, Charles (pā-rō’). A French poet; born at Paris, Jan. 12, 1628; died there, May 16, 1703. He wrote a poem on ‘The Age of Louis the Great’ (1687); a ‘Parallel between the Ancients and the Moderns’; and a series of immortal fairy-tales in prose: ‘Stories of my Mother the Goose’ (1697), containing ‘Puss in Boots,’ ‘Red Riding Hood,’ ‘Bluebeard,’ ‘Cinderella,’ ‘Tom Thumb,’ etc. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
