Chestnutt, Charles Waddell. An American lawyer and author, of African descent; born in Cleveland, OH, June 20, 1858; died in 1932. Among his published works are: ‘The Conjure Woman’ (1899); ‘The Wife of His Youth’ (1899); ‘Life of Frederick Douglass’ (1899); ‘The House Behind the Cedars’ (1900).
