Clément Marot (1496–1544)
Marot, Clément. A famous French poet; born at Cahors, 1496; died at Turin, 1544. He was easily the first French poet of his age, noted for literary vivacity, facility, and grace. He excelled in elegies, eclogues, and epistles. His metrical version of the Psalms, however, is heavy and prosy. Among his works were: ‘The Temple of Cupid’ (1515), and ‘Hell’ (1526).
