Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837–1899)
Brinton, Daniel Garrison. An American surgeon, archæologist and ethnologist; born at Thornbury, PA, May 13, 1837; died at Atlantic City, NJ, July 31, 1899. During the Civil War he was a surgeon in the Union army. From 1867 to 1887 he was editor of the Medical and Surgical Reporter. In 1884 he was appointed professor of ethnology at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia; and in 1886 professor of American linguistics and archæology in the University of Pennsylvania. Among his many works are: Notes on the ‘Floridian Peninsula’ (1859); ‘American Hero Myths’ (1882); etc. He edited the Maya chronicles, and dealt authoritatively with many American archæological topics.
