Hume, David. A British historian and philosopher; born in Edinburgh, April 26, 1711; died there, Aug. 25, 1776. His works include: ‘A Treatise on Human Nature’ (1739–40); ‘Essays, Moral and Political’ (1741–42); ‘Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding’ (1748), which subsequently had the title ‘An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding’; ‘Political Discourses’ (1751); ‘An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals’ (1751); ‘Four Dissertations’ (1757); ‘History of England’ (1754–61); ‘Natural History of Religion’ (1757); ‘Two Essays’ (1777); ‘Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion’ (1779); etc. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
